Landaluce Educe Racing's 2013 Broodmare Band Portraits [14:02]
BROODMARE PORTRAIT PHOTO SHOOT This video captures the effort and manner by which all of our broodmares and N1 had their portraits taken in February. The goal is to get the filly in full sunlight with the dark background of the barn to help her stand out and provide definition. The filly's head is angled between 20 and 45° for two different photos. One will show the brass nameplate on the halter and the other is more of a head-on shot. The photo is taken at an angle to give depth perception to the filly's body. Shown in this session are: The groom, Tina who was drafted to work the reflector, Wendy - Matt's wife and a talented photographer but today is working on getting the horses attention to get their ears perked and alert, and Matt taking the photos. The reflector puts soft light on the dark side of the filly to highlight the brass nameplate on the halter and gives light to the filly's eye. Wendy has a recording of various barnyard animals to grab the horse's attention. It is a process, but when the moment is right a portrait to remember is captured. Niji's Grand Girl (Candy Ride), Volcat (After Market), Mazzy (Giant's Causeway), and Niji's Foal (Giant's Causeway) each have their portraits taken. The video is 14 minutes long, but captures all that went into the hour spent getting the portraits. Music: Groove Armada - 'Edge Hill,' 'Little By Little,' 'My Friend.'
1995 Santa Anita Derby [12:44]
He wasn't named after Larry Bird, but Larry The Legend became a star in his own right yesterday when he captured the $700000 Santa Anita Derby in stirring fashion under Gary Stevens. A humble $2500 sales purchase, standing but 15 hands high and weighing only 900 pounds, Larry The Legend knocked off two giants. He caught previously undefeated Afternoon Deelites, the 7-5 favorite with Kent Desormeaux, at the wire while the rally of 2-year-old champion Timber Country fell short. With Pat Day aboard, Timber Country could do no better than fourth as the 9-5 second choice of 36003 fans.
1997 Florida Derby [02:55]
Captain Bodgit stole the thunder from Pulpit yesterday, roaring down the stretch to capture the $500000 Florida Derby and throw the Kentucky Derby watch into an uproar. Pulpit, formerly undefeated and the 2-5 choice, ran well under Shane Sellers to finish second, but he was no match for Captain Bodgit, who authored a bold move around the far turn with Alex Solis, coming from sixth place to prevail by 2 1/2 lengths at 7-2. The time for the mile and an eighth was an ordinary 1:50 3/5, following fractions of :23 1/5, :47 3/5, 1:12 and 1:37 2/5, over a track officially labeled as "fast."
