Up Close at Belmont with Stay Put [01:56]
At Belmont Park, Stay Put went an easy half-mile just after the renovation break under exercise rider Loren Diego, with NYRA clockers catching the chestnut colt in 50.62. "I liked the way he breezed this morning,' said Diego, who is supervising Stay Put's Belmont preparations until trainer Steve Margolis arrives Monday evening. "The main thing is to keep him happy, keep him fresh. I think he's been handling the track well since he's been here." Winner of an optional claimer at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, Stay Put arrived at Belmont Park on Thursday, galloping over the main track twice prior to Sunday's move. According to Diego, Stay Put will jog a mile on Monday, walk or jog on Tuesday, and gallop into the race. "I think a mile-and-a-half suits him," said Diego. "It's going to help him because he comes from off the pace."

1993 Strub Stakes Grade I [02:52]
Siberian Summer paid $34.40 to win Sunday, accounting for the fourth-biggest payoff in Strub history and the largest since Swing Till Dawn, catching the kind of muddy track that he loved, won the 1983 running and paid $78.80. War Heim holds the record with his $98 payoff in 1971. Bertrando, sent off at 3-10 in betting that included 20455 fans at the track, became one of the biggest disappointments in Strub history, a list that includes Damascus, who was 1-5 while losing by a head to Most Host in 1968. Before Sunday, Siberian Summer was best known for his ability to finish second. His 14-race record going into the Strub consisted of three victories--none in a stake--and seven seconds. Even a switch to grass didn't improve his form against the top competition; he was ninth in last year's Del Mar Derby and eighth in the Hollywood Derby. On Thursday, the day before entries were due for the Strub, mcanally had considered skipping the race. "We almost didn't run," the 60-year-old trainer said, "but then I considered who we had to beat. Bertrando really isn't a mile-and-a-quarter horse. Then there was Star Recruit and Major Impact, but after that, the field wasn't really that tough." So mcanally called Siberian Summer's breeder and owner, Mahmoud Fustok, in Florida and they agreed to run. The decision was worth $275000, more than doubling what the gray Siberian Express-Mia Karina colt had earned. Corey Nakatani rode Siberian Summer for the first time, settling the colt into ...
