However, the show must go on... and it did, with Union Rags taking the win for the 2012 Belmont Stakes. Union Rags prevailed in the field of 11 3-year-olds in the 144th running of the Belmont, but even so, there wasn't much excitement among fans entering the huge racetrack hours before the race. The Belmont win is worth $600000 out of a $1 million purse. "I don't have words to describe it," jockey John Velazquez said. "For (trainer Michael Matz) to finally rise up to the top again, I'm very, very happy. Union Rags passed by Painter at the finish line, giving Valazquez his second career win. Union Rags came in 7th at the Kentucky Derby and bypassed the Preakness Stakes altogether. As for I'll Have Another, he did make an appearance, however. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner will instead be led to the winner's circle before the race for a retirement ceremony. "We felt that this would be a fitting ceremonial retirement for an incredible racehorse," I'll Have Another's trainer Doug O'Neill said.
