1996 Preakness Stakes - Full ABC Broadcast [01:03:46]
It was the day of sweet revenge in racing: Louis Quatorze won the 121st Preakness Stakes with Pat Day riding, just 10 days after he was replaced as a jockey by trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who watched today while his record streak ended after six straight Triple Crown victories. Day was signed for his ride by Nick Zito, the most vocal critic of Lukas and his hordes of horses. And they scored the coup of the year when Louis Quatorze, 16th in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness betting, led every step of the way to outrun Skip Away by three and a quarter lengths. No Derby horse had ever finished so far back and returned two weeks later to win the Preakness. The closest that Lukas got to extending his streak was third place, with Editor's Note. The 8-5 favorite, Cavonnier, trained by Bob Baffert, finished fourth. Lukas, who entered five horses in the Derby and three in the Preakness, also finished fifth with Victory Speech and seventh with Prince of Thieves. Louis Quatorze even supplied some storybook numbers of his own. He ran the mile and three-sixteenths in 1:532/5 on a fast track, matching the record for the race set 12 years ago by Tank's Prospect, with Day in the saddle that day, too. In fact, this was the fifth time that Day had won the Preakness and the third in a row. The colt, a son of Sovereign Dancer, paid $19 for $2 to win and earned $458120 for his owners -- Bill Condren and Joe Cornacchia, who were the owners of other Zito stars like Strike the Gold and ...

1999 Belmont Stakes - Lemon Drop Kid : Full ABC Broadcast [01:01:11]
Charismatic, standing on the threshold of sweeping the Triple Crown, missed his date with history yesterday when he ran third in the Belmont Stakes behind the 29-1 long shot Lemon Drop Kid. And, worse, in a stunning finish to the saga of the colt who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness at long odds, Charismatic fractured two bones in his left front leg as he crossed the finish line. The injury did not appear to be life-threatening but it ended his racing career. It also brought a sorrowful close to what had been a rousing day at Belmont Park, with a record crowd of 85818 on hand in perfect weather to see if Charismatic could become the first horse in 21 years to win the Triple Crown. Instead, he became the 15th horse, and the third in three years, to win the Derby and Preakness but fail to cross the finish line first in the mile-and-a-half race. Charismatic, who ran in a claiming race in February before surging to the top of the 3-year-old racing world in the past two months, will undergo surgery late this morning. Dr. Larry Bramlage, a veterinarian from Lexington, Ky., reported that the colt had cracked the cannon bone just above the ankle and had fractured the sesamoid behind it. ''It is not life-threatening,'' Bramlage said, ''but it definitely means his racing career is over. However, he should be fine as a stallion.'' Chris Antley, the jockey who overcame problems of weight and substance abuse and made a roaring comeback aboard Charismatic in the Derby and the ...

1998 Belmont Stakes - Victory Gallop : Full ABC Broadcast [01:09:42]
The Triple Crown of horse racing slipped away from Real Quiet in the final strides of the Belmont Stakes yesterday, when he was run down and beaten by a nose by Victory Gallop, the horse who chased him home in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. They staged a roaring duel down the homestretch on a brilliantly sunny and cool afternoon before 80162 fans at Belmont Park, the second-largest crowd to see the race in its 130 runnings. And they saw a Belmont Stakes of show-stopping drama, the closest in the 20 years since Affirmed nipped Alydar by a head to become the 11th horse to win the Triple Crown. No horse has completed a sweep since then. Real Quiet became the 14th to lose it in the final race in the series, and lost by the narrowest margin among those 14. Afterward, the stewards suggested that he might have been disqualified if he had won the race because he brushed Victory Gallop twice in the homestretch. For the second year in a row, the trainer Bob Baffert was foiled on the threshold of completing a Triple Crown. He was thwarted last year when Silver Charm lost the Belmont to Touch Gold by three-quarters of a length. He was foiled again this year when Real Quiet was nipped by Victory Gallop. And in one of those twists of fortune, Silver Charm's losing jockey, Gary Stevens, became the winning jockey this year on Victory Gallop. ''Being beat at the finish line, it hurts a lot,'' said Kent Desormeaux, who rode Real Quiet in the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont ...
