PC MPP John O'Toole speaking at Queen's Park rally for Ontario's horse racing industry [00:40]
On Monday, March 26, members and supporters of Ontario's horse-racing industry showed up at Queen's Park en masse to protest the Ontario Liberal Government's decision to close slot parlours at a number of provincial raceways and inexplicably walk away from the mutually-beneficial and highly-successful slots-at-racetracks contractual partnership. With buses from all over the province converging on Queen's Park, more than 1500 individuals, including MPPs, representatives from all of Ontario's horsemen's groups and other political representatives, congregated in order to let elected leaders and the mass media know that the industry will not take the Liberals' hasty, misinformed, and reckless decision in stride. In closing multiple raceway slots parlours and planning to step away from the economic machine which is the slots-at-racetracks program, the Provincial Liberal Government has essentially taken the stance that employing 60000 Ontarians, raking in more than $1.36-billion in direct annual revenue, and creating $2-billion in annual economic impact for the province is not worth trumpeting, let alone saving. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan has been falsely referring to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Slots at Racetrack revenue sharing program as a subsidy. His claim is that the Government has been providing a $345 million annual subsidy to Ontario's Horse Racing Industry. In a recent fundraising email to supporters, the Ontario Liberal Party suggested that they are "choosing ...

2012-03-31 Turffontein - race 8 [02:04]
Slumdogmillionaire wins the GRADE-1 SA Classic.. The main event of the 12 race program, the SA Classic Grade-1 for 3 year olds over 1800m, saw Team G represented with Slumdogmillionaire and Brooks Club, both drawn out wide at 11 and 12. There were no slip ups at the jump this time for Slumdog and he bounced straight out to take lead and set his own pace throughout. Brooks Club didn't fare as well and he ended up widest of all, mid-field with nowhere to go. Turning for home Slumdogmillionaire once again took a bit of time to get going and halfway down the straight he was under pressure as race favourite Gimmethegreenlight slipped past him. The changeover was short-lived however as Slumdogmillionaire kicked into finishing gear to retake the lead and stay there. Pomodoro flew up at the death and did everything but tag Slumdogmillionaire on the line in a decision that had to go to the judges.. ..and SLUMDOGMILLIONAIRE! by a nose, jubilation for the connections and followers and another Grade-1 under the belt for Team G Racing. Slumdogmillionaire earned his owners Messers J. Sarkis and A. Greyvensteyn a cool R1.25million for the win, recouping his purchase price and surging into profit with a massive future still to come. Brooks Club who raced widest throughout, was unable to produce his trademark acceleration down the straight and finished 3 lengths back in 5th position. His turn will come.

Heartbeat of Ontario Horse Racing: Anthony MacDonald [01:00]
In light of the recent announcement from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, that it plans to end the province-wide Slots at Racetracks program in March 2013, a series of videos were created to illustrate the wide range of people who will be dramatically affected by this decision. Horseman Anthony MacDonald of Guelph, Ont. is like many of the more than 60000 people involved directly or indirectly with horse racing in Ontario, individuals that make up the heartbeat of Ontario's vital and valuable industry. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan has been falsely referring to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Slots at Racetrack revenue sharing program as a subsidy. His claim is that the Government has been providing a $345 million annual subsidy to Ontario's Horse Racing Industry. In a recent fundraising email to supporters, the Ontario Liberal Party suggested that they are "choosing to support our youngest learners over wealthy race track owners". According to OLG's financial statements, the Government of Ontario is receiving $1.1 billion per year from the Slots at Racetracks Program. The horse racing industry, which has made space available to OLG slots and allowed competition between the slots and horse racing at their facilities, receives only 20% of the revenue from the slots. The Government walks away with 75% of the slots revenue and host municipalities receive 5%. Both NDP Leader Andrea Horwath (ow.ly and PC Leader Tim Hudak (ow.ly have blasted the Liberals and this ...
