Haynesfield - 2011 McMahon Adena Empire Classic [02:12]
Haynesfield made a triumphant return to the winner's circle at Belmont Park on Saturday afternoon, taking the lead at the top of the stretch and holding off a resurgent Green Monster to win the 36th running of the $200000 McMahon Adena Empire Classic on New York Showcase Day. It was the first victory in three starts this year for the 5-year-old son of Speightstown, who had not run since a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on May 30. Owned by Turtle Bird Stable, Haynesfield won the 2009 Empire Classic as a 3-year-old and had an outstanding year in 2010, winning the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap and finishing second in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile.

Elusive Pearl - 2011 Pebbles S. [01:59]
Able to dictate a slow tempo, Elusive Pearl proved impossible to catch on Monday at Belmont Park in the $100000 Pebbles for 3-year-old fillies. After grabbing the lead as the field exited the one-mile chute on the Widener turf course, Elusive Pearl received token pressure from Divalarious through soft fractions of 24.88 and 50.44. The favorite was kept under a hold entering the stretch and was hand-ridden as she opened on her rivals, with runner-up Hessonite closing down the center of the track to finish 2 ¼ lengths behind the winner. The final time for one-mile over firm turf was 1:36.61. Elusive Pearl, returned $6.10 for a $2 win wager.

Havre de Grace - 2011 Woodward (G1) [02:23]
Havre de Grace put herself squarely in the race for Horse of the Year honors on Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course, powering into the lead with 200 yards to go and pulling clear to a rousing 1 ¼-length victory over seven males in the 58th running of the Grade 1, $750000 Woodward. The 4-year-old daughter of Saint Liam became just the second female ever to win the 1 1/8-mile race, joining Rachel Alexandra, who capped her 2009 Horse of the Year campaign with a win in the Woodward. Sent off as the 2-1 favorite and confidently ridden by Ramon Dominguez, Havre de Grace left from post position 6, then raced wide around the first turn as Rule, closely followed by Mission Impazible, carried the field through an opening quarter-mile in 23.93 seconds. Angled toward the inside as the half went in 48.09, Havre de Grace began inching closer approaching the far turn and launched her bid with three-eighths of a mile to go. Just two lengths back in second at the top of the stretch, Havre de Grace steadily cut into Rule's margin, taking over inside the eighth pole with enough left to turn back the late bid from Flat Out. Her winning time was 1:49.18.

State of Play - 2011 With Anticipation (G2) [02:01]
Well-rated on the lead, State of Play turned back Optimizer's stretch bid to win Saratoga Race Course's Grade 2, $150000 With Anticipation for 2-year-olds on Thursday. State of Play cleared up front, dictating fractions of 24.24, 49.78 and 1:14.64 before Optimzer drew to the pacesetter's throatlatch with a furlong to travel. Given left-handed encouragement by Ramon Dominguez, State of Play brushed off that challenge to prevail by a half-length. The final time for 1 1/16 miles over the firm Mellon turf course was 1:43.97. The With Anticipation was State of Play's first start around two turns, having come from just off the pace to win a 5 ½-furlong turf sprint on July 27 at the Spa.
