1987 Massachusetts Handicap - Broad Brush -vs- Waquoit [01:56]
Waquoit, ridden by Chris McCarron, held off a late stretch drive by Broad Brush, the favorite, for an upset victory yesterday in the 53d running of the Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs in Boston. Waquoit, the top horse in New England last year, broke out immediately to lead the six-horse field and stayed in front until the sixteenth pole. Broad Brush, ridden by Angel Cordero, put a head in front, but McCarron urged Waquoit on and won by a nose. Broad Brush carried topweight of 126 pounds, conceding from 4 to 17 pounds to the rest of the field. Waquoit, who carried 117 pounds, was timed in 1:49 for a mile and an eighth and returned $10.60 for $2 to win. He earned $124560 for his owner, Joseph Federico, from the total purse of $207600. Finishing third was Tour d'Or, ridden by Tammi Campbell.

Cape Blanco - 2011 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational (G1) [02:57]
Odds-on favorite Cape Blanco narrowly retained his unbeaten record in the United States, holding off longshot Dean's Kitten to take the 35th running of the Grade 1, $500000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic on "Super Saturday" at Belmont Park. A well-traveled 4-year-old, Cape Blanco shadowed Mission Approved in second placed through fractions of 52.42, 1:19.37, 1:44.92 and was put to a drive by jockey Jamie Spencer after dispatching the pacesetter midway on the second turn. The favorite took a clear lead into the stretch but was tested to the wire by Dean's Kitten, whose rally fell a nose short. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Cape Blanco completed 1 ½ miles on yielding turf in 2:36.61 and returned $3.20 for a $2 win wager as the 3-5 favorite.
