1998 Belmont Stakes - Victory Gallop : Full ABC Broadcast [01:09:42]
The Triple Crown of horse racing slipped away from Real Quiet in the final strides of the Belmont Stakes yesterday, when he was run down and beaten by a nose by Victory Gallop, the horse who chased him home in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. They staged a roaring duel down the homestretch on a brilliantly sunny and cool afternoon before 80162 fans at Belmont Park, the second-largest crowd to see the race in its 130 runnings. And they saw a Belmont Stakes of show-stopping drama, the closest in the 20 years since Affirmed nipped Alydar by a head to become the 11th horse to win the Triple Crown. No horse has completed a sweep since then. Real Quiet became the 14th to lose it in the final race in the series, and lost by the narrowest margin among those 14. Afterward, the stewards suggested that he might have been disqualified if he had won the race because he brushed Victory Gallop twice in the homestretch. For the second year in a row, the trainer Bob Baffert was foiled on the threshold of completing a Triple Crown. He was thwarted last year when Silver Charm lost the Belmont to Touch Gold by three-quarters of a length. He was foiled again this year when Real Quiet was nipped by Victory Gallop. And in one of those twists of fortune, Silver Charm's losing jockey, Gary Stevens, became the winning jockey this year on Victory Gallop. ''Being beat at the finish line, it hurts a lot,'' said Kent Desormeaux, who rode Real Quiet in the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont ...

1995 Belmont Stakes - Thunder Gulch : Full ABC Broadcast [01:04:11]
With his star, Timber Country, back in the barn recovering from a virus, the trainer D. Wayne Lukas marched into the racing record books yesterday when his other colt, Thunder Gulch, won the 127th Belmont Stakes by two lengths after a tingling duel down the homestretch with Nick Zito's Star Standard. Lukas became the first trainer ever to win five straight triple crown races, which he did with three horses, and the first to sweep the triple crown with two horses: the absent Timber Country, who won the Preakness three weeks ago, and Thunder Gulch, who won the Kentucky Derby five weeks ago. "I'm overwhelmed and very, very happy," Lukas said. "Everything fell into place. When it got down to one horse with Timber Country out, it all rested on Thunder Gulch's shoulders. And he was ready." He has been getting ready since last November, when he won the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct and began a string of successes that catapulted him from his rank as a second-string horse in a Lukas barn crammed with stars: second in the Hollywood Futurity, first in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, first in the Florida Derby, first in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness. And after his stablemate was scratched because of the virus and a fever, which subsided yesterday, Thunder Gulch added the $697400 Belmont Stakes as the flag bearer of the stable. He stalked an exceedingly slow pace set by Star Standard, ridden by Julie Krone, who crossed over from the outside post position immediately after ...

Better Lucky - 2012 Sands Point (G2) [02:10]
Better Lucky made her turf debut a winning one, taking the lead in deep stretch and holding off the furious late drive of Regalo Mia Monday afternoon at Belmont Park to take the Grade 2, $200000 Sands Point by a nose. The 3-year-old Ghostzapper filly, whose victory over a muddy track in her previous start prompted trainer Tom Albertrani to try her on the turf, saved ground within striking range of pacesetter Preach Tome Daddy as she led through an opening quarter-mile in 25.60 seconds and a half in 49.74. Tipped the outside by jockey Eddie Castro as the field turned for home, Better Lucky moved up to duel for the lead with Zultanite through the stretch, edging clear in the final yards and hitting the wire a heartbeat ahead of the fast-closing Regalo Mia. Her time for 1 1/16 miles over firm turf was 1:42.75.

1986 Kentucky Derby - Ferdinand [21:48]
A horse from California was supposed to win the 112th Kentucky Derby, but hardly anybody expected it to be Ferdinand, a 17‚1 shot ridden by a 54-year-old jockey and saddled by a 73-year-old trainer. But at the finish of a slow and roughly run Derby, it was Ferdinand, ridden by Bill Shoemaker and trained by Charlie Whittingham, drawing away to a 21/4- length victory over Bold Arrangement and Broad Brush, with the favored Californians, Snow Chief and Badger Land, off the board. Shoemaker steered Ferdinand, a son of the English triple crown winner Nijinsky II, through heavy traffic from last place to first while covering the mile and a quarter in a dull 2:024/5. Bold Arrangement, an English colt, won a three-way duel for second place, finishing three-quarters of a length in front of Broad Brush. Snow Chief, the 2‚1 favorite, tired badly to finish 11th after taking a brief lead round the far turn. Ferdinand paid $37.40 for $2 to win, the highest Derby payoff since Gato del Sol, also a Californian, also rallied to win from last place and returned $41.40 in 1982. The race was a sentimental triumph for Shoemaker, who became by far the oldest rider ever to win the race while scoring his fourth Derby triumph, and for Whittingham, a Hall of Fame trainer who had never won a Derby. Artistically, though, it was a less successful Derby run before a crowd of 123891. The winner's time over a fast track was the slowest in 12 years, and more horses had rough trips than honest ones today ...
