Stakes winner Vallarta prevailed in a three-way photo finish over hard-knocking stalwart Boss Ego and eventual Longacres Mile and Bay Meadows Handicap winner Adreamisborn in this May 30, 2004 allowance/optional claiming race on turf at Bay Meadows. Roberto Gonzalez rode Vallarta for trainer Donna Elordi.

Pheiffer upsets Lacie Girl in 2003 Charles H. Russell at Bay Meadows [02:03]
Lacie Girl was one of my favorite horses, but I had never seen her in person until I saw her compete in the 2003 Charles H. Russell Handicap. I was looking forward to seeing the consistent mare post yet another stakes victory, but Pheiffer had other plans as she dug in to hold off Lacie Girl by a nose. Lacie Girl would suffer another nose defeat 13 days later when she finished second in the Very Subtle Handicap on Breeders' Cup Day at Santa Anita. The Charles H. Russell was the first of three stakes wins for Pheiffer, who was ridden by Ron Warren, Jr. for trainer Donna Elordi.
