Already a Grade I winner over a route of ground last year as a 3-year-old, Coil earned an automatic berth into next month's $1.5 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (Grade I) by rallying late under Martin Garcia to win the $250000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship (Grade I) by a head over stable mate Capital Account. Since moving to Bob Baffert's barn, Coil has won 6-of-10 starts and eclipsed $1 million in career earnings by wining for the third time at the traditional six furlong sprint distance for owners Pegram or Watson or Weitman. The 7-to-1 price on Coil was by far the most generous of his career, which was previously the 9-to-2 his backers received when the Point Given colt made his first start for Baffert while breaking his maiden by over three lengths at Hollywood Park in November of 2010. Looking to move one step closer to defending his Breeders' Cup and Eclipse Award Sprint Championships from a year ago, Amazombie faded to fourth as the 4-to-5 favorite after sitting the perfect trip behind dueling leaders and getting first jump on the closers. The Breeders' Cup horse that arrived last at Churchill Downs ran first Saturday as Concern beat Tabasco Cat by a neck in the $3-million Classic, ending on a high note a long year of unfulfilled promise for the 3-year-old colt from Maryland. Trainer Dick Small's style is to ship a horse to a race at a late hour, and by van instead of plane. He made no exception with Concern, even though the late-running son of Broad Brush was appearing in the most important stake of his 21-race career. A 10 1/2-hour trip brought Concern and the trainer to Kentucky at 3 am Friday, long after all the other Breeders' Cup horses had settled in and been tested during workouts over the Churchill Downs track. Concern did all of his Breeders' Cup preparations at Pimlico, where he worked a mile on Monday. "I find that most horses do better in their own surroundings," Small said. "It's better not to disrupt their daily rhythms." Small played it even closer to the vest when Concern ran in the Travers in August. For that race, the horse was driven to Upstate New York and arrived at 4 am on the day of the race, about 13 hours before post time. He lost by a neck to Holy Bull, the probable horse of the year who didn't run in the Breeders' Cup. With the screams of 28134 fans rising an octave with every last stride he took to the wire, Best Pal caught Twilight Agenda in the final 30 yards Saturday to score a one-length victory in the $1-million Pacific Classic, the richest race in the 52-year history of Del Mar. Because he was a 3-year-old in a field of older horses, Best Pal carried eight pounds less than the others in the 1 1/4-race that was expected to establish the horse of the year. Instead, Best Pal's victory complicated the issue, with Farma Way, the 3-2 favorite, running fifth after leading until the quarter pole, and Festin, his late-running archrival in four other races, ending up fourth. Best Pal was bred and is raced by John and Betty Mabee, San Diegans who have been part of the Del Mar family for more than 20 years. John Mabee is chairman of the board at the track and was one of the forces behind creation of the Pacific Classic. "This horse is the public's choice," Mabee said after Best Pal's $550000 payday. "We just wanted to run a horse in this race that wouldn't disgrace us. I thought he was better coming into this race than the press gave him credit for, but maybe this was just owner prejudice. "There's no question that he's got a fan base. He would have been 15-1 instead of 9-2 if they had paid attention to the handicappers in the papers."
