And they saw a Belmont Stakes of show-stopping drama, the closest in the 20 years since Affirmed nipped Alydar by a head to become the 11th horse to win the Triple Crown. No horse has completed a sweep since then. Real Quiet became the 14th to lose it in the final race in the series, and lost by the narrowest margin among those 14. Afterward, the stewards suggested that he might have been disqualified if he had won the race because he brushed Victory Gallop twice in the homestretch. For the second year in a row, the trainer Bob Baffert was foiled on the threshold of completing a Triple Crown. He was thwarted last year when Silver Charm lost the Belmont to Touch Gold by three-quarters of a length. He was foiled again this year when Real Quiet was nipped by Victory Gallop. Although Foiled Again's 2012 debut was foiled by sloppy track conditions, trainer Ron Burke says his prized pacer is still on schedule for his spring campaign. The 2011 Pace of the Year is now set to qualify Thursday, March 8 at the Meadowlands en route to his first stakes stop, the Levy Series at Yonkers. Foiled Again, who earned $1.4 million last season and became the oldest pacer in history to have a million-dollar campaign, is the first pacer older than the age of 4 to receive Pacer of the Year.
