1991 Pacific Classic [04:13]
With the screams of 28134 fans rising an octave with every last stride he took to the wire, Best Pal caught Twilight Agenda in the final 30 yards Saturday to score a one-length victory in the $1-million Pacific Classic, the richest race in the 52-year history of Del Mar. Because he was a 3-year-old in a field of older horses, Best Pal carried eight pounds less than the others in the 1 1/4-race that was expected to establish the horse of the year. Instead, Best Pal's victory complicated the issue, with Farma Way, the 3-2 favorite, running fifth after leading until the quarter pole, and Festin, his late-running archrival in four other races, ending up fourth. Best Pal was bred and is raced by John and Betty Mabee, San Diegans who have been part of the Del Mar family for more than 20 years. John Mabee is chairman of the board at the track and was one of the forces behind creation of the Pacific Classic. "This horse is the public's choice," Mabee said after Best Pal's $550000 payday. "We just wanted to run a horse in this race that wouldn't disgrace us. I thought he was better coming into this race than the press gave him credit for, but maybe this was just owner prejudice. "There's no question that he's got a fan base. He would have been 15-1 instead of 9-2 if they had paid attention to the handicappers in the papers." Twilight Agenda, Farma Way's stablemate from trainer Wayne Lukas' barn, took the lead from Farma Way heading into the stretch but finished second, 2 3/4 ...

1989 Preakness Stakes: Full ABC Broadcast [01:02:48]
Sunday Silence, who raised more questions than he answered when he beat Easy Goer by two and a half lengths in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, proved himself a worthy Triple Crown contender today by winning the 114th and closest Preakness Stakes ever at Pimlico Race Course. The blackish colt from California raced head and head with Easy Goer for the length of the stretch before regaining the lead in the final yards to win by a long nose. The last time a Preakness was decided in a photo finish was when Affirmed held off Alydar by a neck in 1978. Now Sunday Silence is one victory away from becoming racing's first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed, and his rivalry with Easy Goer, a son of Alydar, is the tightest Triple Crown battle since then. The two colts will hook up again in the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 10, where victory would bring Sunday Silence's owners a total of $5 million in purses and bonuses for the series. The winner had to survive a claim of foul from Pat Day, Easy Goer's rider, who alleged interference by Pat Valenzuela and Sunday Silence through their stretch duel. After reviewing the films for seven minutes, the stewards let the order of finish stand. Another unrelated foul claim, by the rider of Dansil, who was fourth, against Rock Point, who was third, was also disallowed. The bettors in a record Pimlico crowd of 90145, unconvinced by Sunday Silence's weaving Derby finish and the slow final time of that race, made Easy Goer the 3-to-5 ...

1985 Breeders' Cup Day [09:22]
Proud Truth, once the favorite for last spring's Kentucky Derby but fifth in that race and sidelined all summer with an injury, stormed from last place to beat Gate Dancer by a head and win the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic yesterday in an upset at Aqueduct Race Track. The victory by the almost-forgotten son of Graustark, coupled with earlier results among the seven Breeders' Cup races, scrambled several championship pictures: . * Chief's Crown, who was favored to win the Classic and with it the champion 3-year-old and horse-of-the-year titles as well, finished a tired fourth, beaten 9 3/4 lengths. * The horse-of-the-year candidate Lady's Secret was walloped by her stablemate Life's Magic in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Distaff.

1990 Kentucky Derby: Full ABC Broadcast [01:08:43]
Unbridled soared past Summer Squall through the stretch to score a surprising 3 1/2-length victory today in the 116th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. A race that had figured to be decided by inches ended instead with a runaway winner and a dozen lengths separating the first four finishers. Unbridled, a 10-1 shot who finished 3 3/4 lengths behind Summer Squall in the Blue Grass Stakes three weeks ago, looked much the best reversing that decision today and was increasing his winning margin with every stride to the wire. Summer Squall finished six lengths in front of Pleasant Tap, a 40-1 shot, and it was another three lengths back to Video Ranger in fourth. Silver Ending, Killer Diller, Land Rush, Mister Frisky, Thirty Six Red, Power Lunch, Real Cash, Dr. Bobby A., Pendleton Ridge, Burnt Hills and Fighting Fantasy completed the finish in that order. Mister Frisky, sent off as the 19-10 favorite by a small margin over Summer Squall, who was 2-1, came into the race with a record of 16 for 16, the best record in Derby history. But the popular colt, who made his first 13 starts in Puerto Rico, faded badly after seven furlongs and finished eighth, beaten by 19 1/4 lengths. Unbridled, a son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Fappiano and the Le Fabuleux mare Gana Facil, paid $23.60 for $2 to win as the fifth betting choice and ran the mile and a quarter in a solid 2:02 under Craig Perret. The bay-colored colt, bred in Florida by Tartan Farms, is owned by Frances A. Genter, who is ...

Emcee - 2012 Forego Stakes (G1) [01:38]
Emcee gave trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and owner Godolphin Racing their fourth Grade 1 win of the 2012 Saratoga Race Course meet by taking the $500000 Forego by 4 ½ lengths on Saturday. "It's an honor to train for Godolphin and to have such quality horses," said McLaughlin, who earlier in the meet teamed with Godolphin to post Grade 1 scores in the TVG Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama with Questing and the Travers via dead heat with Alpha. "It makes my job easier, but I have a great team of people behind me, and it's been an unbelievable meet. It's hard to even believe. It will take some time to sink in." Emcee, who was seeking his first Grade 1 in three starts at the level, pressed pacesetter Pacific Ocean in second through a quarter-mile in 22.64 seconds and a half in 45.38. Jersey Town made a bold run along the inside to pass the top two in the run into the stretch before Emcee overtook that rival inside the final furlong and drove clear late. Hamazing Destiny nipped Jersey Town by a neck for second. Off as the 3-2 favorite, Emcee returned $5.10 for a $2 win wager and ran seven furlongs in 1:21.00.
