1989 Alabama Stakes [03:38]
For those hard-to-please critics who had been complaining that Open Mind is a brilliant horse with a bland style, the 3-year-old filly responded with a gritty performance on a rainy day at Saratoga. At the top of the stretch of the $232400 Alabama Stakes, Open Mind's chances appeared to be as gloomy as the day itself. She was ahead of only one horse, stablemate Lea Lucinda. She trailed the front-running Dearly Loved by more than five lengths and was running in the middle of the track, where the muddy surface had the consistency of butterscotch pudding. Open Mind had gone into Saturday's 109th Alabama with a nine-race winning streak dating to last November, but now, at 1-5 odds, she looked hopelessly beaten. Her critics were ready to add Open Mind's name to the list of fallen Saratoga favorites, which includes Man o' War, Gallant Fox and Secretariat. Before a crowd of 30309, Open Mind chose not to become a part of that gallery. "Of all the fillies I've ridden," Angel Cordero would say later, "I've never been on one who tries as hard as this filly. If she were a person, she'd want to work seven days a week." Cordero went to his whip 16 times--seven times from the right and nine from the left--and it took that 16th whack to get owner Gene Klein's filly to the wire, a neck before Dearly Loved. Open Mind might win 10 more races in a row, if she is allowed to stay on the track long enough, but no victory will come any harder than Saturday's. Jean Cruguet was aboard Dearly Loved ...
Kauai Katie - 2012 Adirondack (G2) [01:39]
Kauai Katie gave Stonestreet Stables their second straight Grade 2 Adirondack victory Sunday at Saratoga Race Course with a front-running score on Sunday in the $200000 race for 2-year-old fillies at Saratoga Race Course. The daughter of Malibu Moon -- a sharp 12-length debut winner on July 20, opening day at the Spa -- was third out of the gate but grabbed the lead by the time the field had left the chute in the 6 ½-furlong race. In front by 1 ½ lengths following an opening quarter-mile in 21.77 seconds, Kauai Katie dismissed a pair of bids through a half-mile in 44.93, and stretched her lead while being driven home by jockey Rosie Napravnik to register a 2 ¾-length victory over Salamera. The final time was 1:16.81, with undefeated Kauai Katie paying $2.80 for a $2 win wager as the 2-5 favorite.

Zo Impressive - 2012 Mother Goose (G1) [02:05]
Zo Impressive took advantage of a tiring pacesetter in Contested and held off a late surge from Disposablepleasure to win Saturday's 56th running of the Grade 1, $300000 Mother Goose at Belmont Park. After breaking sharply from post position 5 under Rajiv Maragh, Zo Impressive was taken back to settle on the outside in third as 1-2 favorite Contested opened up 1 ½ lengths on longshot Wildcat's Smile through a quarter mile in 23.08 and a half in 46.47. Asked for run leaving the five-sixteenths pole, the front-running Acorn winner came up empty. Zo Impressive, meanwhile, was set down to duel with late-running Disposablepleasure, whom she bested by three-quarters of a length. The final time for 1 1/16-miles was 1:44.28 over a track rated good. Kentucky Oaks winner Believe You Can, who tracked the leaders from the inside throughout, finished third, followed by Wildcat's Smile and Contested. A jockey's objection by Ramon Dominguez, the rider of Disposablepleasure, against the winner for alleged interference in the stretch run was disallowed by the stewards.
