Friend Or Foe - 2010 Empire Classic [02:09]
Heavily favored Friend Or Foe returned to the winner's circle Saturday afternoon with a front-running, stakes-record victory in the 35th running of the $200000 Empire Classic for New York-breds, the centerpiece of New York Showcase Day at Belmont Park. Trained by John Kimmel for Chester and Mary Broman, the 3-year-old Friends Lake colt grabbed the lead soon after the gates opened and cruised through unpressured fractions of 23.15, 46.79 and 1:10.39. Set down at the head of the lane by jockey Alex Solis, Friend Or Foe easily pulled away from his nine rivals and hit the wire five lengths in front, covering the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.94 over a fast track. His time easily eclipsed the previous record of 1:48.00 set by Instant Friendship in 1997. From 1976 through 1994, the race was called the Empire Stakes for 2-year-olds going six furlongs.

Dynaslew - 2010 Ballston Spa (G2) [02:01]
Dynaslew collared front-running Silver Reunion with a furlong to go and went on to post a half-length victory Saturday afternoon in the 22nd running of the Grade 2, $200000 Ballston Spa Handicap at Saratoga Race Course. Patiently ridden by Eibar Coa, the 4-year-old Dynaformer filly sat just two lengths behind Silver Reunion, who led the field of 10 fillies and mares through opening fractions of 23.44, 47.54 and 1:11.15 over the firm Inner Turf course. Silver Reunion straightened for home with a clear lead, but Dynaslew was just hitting her best stride and after battling briefly with the pacesetter, began edging to the front and hit the wire in 1:40.58 for the 1 1/16th miles. "In the stretch, she just kept digging and digging and digging," said Coa of Dynaslew, whose previous graded stakes victory came in the Grade 3 Beaugay at Belmont Park in May. "She never stopped running." The victory was the third in five starts this year for Dynaslew, who in her previous start finished fourth, beaten just a neck, by Proviso in the Grade 1 Diana at the Spa on July 31. Trained by Seth Benzel for Live Oak Plantation, she earned $240000 for the victory, nearly doubling her bankroll to $486850. Overall, Dynaslew is 5-4-0 from 13 starts.

Rightly So - 2010 Ballerina (G1) [01:52]
Rightly So led every step and earned her first Grade 1 win Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course with a front-running, four-length victory over Warbling in the 32nd running of the $250000 Ballerina Stakes. The consistent daughter of Read the Footnotes, never worse than third in 11 lifetime starts, immediately shot to the front when the gates opened for the seven-furlong dash and sashayed unthreatened through opening fractions of 22.46, 44.80 and 1:09.29. Opening up through the final yards under jockey Cornelio Velasquez after a fleeting challenge from Warbling, Rightly So hit the wire in 1:22.58 for her second victory in five starts this year. "My filly broke well and went right to the lead and she finished well, too," said Velasquez, who was aboard for her first graded stakes win in the Grade 3 Bed o' Roses Handicap at Belmont Park on July 5. "I had a lot of horse at the quarter pole, so she really ran a big one. Speed has been holding up well today, and I was fortunate to have a good break and make the lead." Rightly So, who was bred in New York and carries the colors of Zayat Stables, LLC, earned $150000 for the victory, her seventh from 11 lifetime starts, and has now amassed $480050. The fourth choice at 9-2 choice in the field of eight fillies and mares, she returned $11.40 for a $2 win bet.

2009 Sham Stakes - The Pamplemousse [04:15]
Trainer Julio Canani insists he doesn't have Derby fever yet. But after the way his The Pamplemousse glided to victory as the 1-2 choice in the $200000 Sham Stakes (gr. III) at Santa Anita Feb. 28, that's going to be more difficult to believe as time marches on toward the first Saturday in May. He is a nice horse," Canani said after watching The Pamplemousse draw away in the stretch. "Every race, this horse is improving more." Victory for The Pamplemousse, with his long, fluid strides, seemed never in doubt as he bounded effortlessly over the Pro-Ride en route to a six-length victory in the 1 1/8-mile Sham. Fractions were decent -- :23.08, :46.51, and 1:10.29 -- as the front-running gray son of Kafwain appeared to widen his advantage at every call for jockey Alex Solis. The Pamplemousse took command over runner-up Take the Points leaving the final turn. Solis delivered one left-handed crack of the whip mid-stretch, then hand-rode the two-time stakes winner to the wire for the easiest of victories in a sharp time of 1:47.86. It was the third straight victory for The Pamplemousse, who appears ready to challenge Pioneerof the Nile for Southern California supremacy in the 3-year-old ranks. Ive never ridden anything like him," Solis said. "The way hes been training, I expected something like this. He has such a high cruising speed and hes getting more and more amazing. He has such a good mind and he was real relaxed the whole way. "If you want to get an idea of how hell do ...

1991 Haskell Invitational [02:41]
Unraced for seven weeks following his Belmont Stakes victory, Hansel ran as if he were an out-of-shape athlete in the Monmouth Park stretch today. The sleek-looking bay finished more than 13 lengths back, in third place, in the $500000 Haskell Invitational Handicap, which was captured by Lost Mountain. Corporate Report was second by a head. The crowd, impressed with Hansel's seven-length victory in the Preakness, which he followed with a gritty head decision over Strike the Gold in the Belmont, poured more than $104000 onto his nose. Hansel went off as the 1-2 favorite. Although placed close to the front-running Corporate Report, he faded in the stretch. "Hansel ran a good race but, you know, he was away seven weeks and they didn't have him at his best," suggested the winning jockey, Craig Perret. Jerry Bailey, aboard Hansel, found he had a luxury horse who had suddenly lost the greatness he displayed at Belmont on June 8. "When Corporate Report moved, I asked Hansel for more, but he was just empty," said Bailey. There may have been another factor in addition to Hansel's layoff. Hansel couldn't get to the front even though he broke from the rail. Instead, Corporate Report quickly took command, while Private Man raced on the outside, boxing in Hansel. "He's a funny horse," Perret said of Hansel. "He's comfortable when free, but confused when boxed in." The track was labeled "good" after being "muddy" for the early races. The first five races were captured by front-runners ...
