Carl Grinstead, one of the owners of Snow Chief, thought he had won. Trainer Mel Stute, who was standing in an aisle in the box-seat area, said he had a perfect position in line with the wire and thought Snow Chief had lost. Eddie Delahoussaye was riding Ferdinand, the horse who charged to the finish line almost stride for stride with Snow Chief. Unlike Grinstead and Stute, Delahoussaye wasn't wearing glasses, and his view was much closer. But Delahoussaye couldn't be sure who had won. That's how close the 40th running of the Charles H. Strub Stakes was on Sunday at Santa Anita, with 58806 fans just as unsure of the outcome as the principals. Finally, the photo-finish camera showed that Snow Chief had beaten Ferdinand by the smallest of noses, and Charlie Whittingham, the trainer of the runner-up, shoved his hands in his pockets, looked at the ground and walked around just outside the winner's circle. "Just one more jump," Whittingham said wistfully. Whittingham has won the Strub twice, but in three of the last four years he's found himself saying the same thing. The film captures a typical day in the life of harness racing (where no day is typical) and offers a rare glimpse of the colour, emotion, character and characters of horse racing. The producers of RACE DAY invited harness racing participants and enthusiasts to record their harness racing day on Saturday, August 6, 2011. Twenty people from across North America submitted more than 10 hours of footage, and from that footage we crafted this film. The colourful people you'll meet, and the behind-the-scenes action you'll experience run the full gamut of this intriguing world. Belmont Week came to a record-setting close yesterday when the California filly Lakeway won the Mother Goose Stakes by more than four lengths over Cinnamon Sugar and by 10 lengths over Inside Information, and pranced to the head of the class of 3-year-old fillies. It was one day after the California colt Tabasco Cat won the Belmont Stakes and moved to the head of the class of 3-year-old colts, and Lakeway gave an even more powerful performance. She not only won for the fifth time in six starts but buried the hometown favorite, Inside Information, who had won six of her seven races. And she did it by knocking one and one-fifth seconds off the record for the race in its 38th running. The two favorites ran together stride for stride for more than half a mile, but then Kent Desormeaux nudged his filly, and Lakeway took charge. She collared Inside Information with three-eighths of a mile to go, edged past her turning for home and widened the lead relentlessly down the stretch. As she flashed home, she had 4 1/4 lengths on Cinnamon Sugar, a 27-1 long shot, who in turn had six lengths on Inside Information. They cruised in fast fractions of 1:083/5 for three-quarters of a mile and 1:332/5 for the mile. And Lakeway completed the mile and an eighth in 1:462/5 , shattering the record for the race set in 1978 by Caesar's Wish, but still a full second off the track record for the distance set in 1973 by the incomparable Secretariat.
