This is a head on view of the start of a 1 1/16th mile race on turf. As soon as the horses are set they are off. The man in the white shirt and tan slacks on the right is the starter.

On the Acceleration and Speed of a Racehorse [06:25]
Horse racing uses a running start where the starting gate is placed back from the point where the race clock starts. This video tries to answer the questions: 1. How fast does a horse get from the gate to the start? 2. How fast is it going when it gets there? and 3. How does this speed compare to its speed at the finish? I use the technique described in my earlier video "How to Measure Instantaneous Speed with a Camcorder" to answer these questions. It makes use of interlaced video to display two images displaced in time by half a frame time, about 1/60sec.
