R Heat Lightning - 2010 Spinaway (G1) [01:52]
Trainer Todd Pletcher broke his own Saratoga Race Course record for wins in a single season in style, sending out R Heat Lightning to victory in Sunday's 119th running of the Grade 1, $250000 Spinaway for 2-year-old fillies. Pletcher came into the Spinaway with 35 wins, and R Heat Lightning's Spinaway score catapulted him past his previous high mark, which he set in 2003 and 2004 when the meet was four days shorter than the current 40 days. R Heat Lightning, one of four entrants for Pletcher in the Spinaway, trailed the field following a quarter mile in a sharp 21.89 before launching a wide rally on the far turn. Alienation had seized a clear advantage at the top of the stretch, but R Heat Lightning made a steady run to grab the lead in the final furlong and open up to a four-length decision. Finishing third, 2 ½ lengths behind Alienation, was favored Valiant Passion, another Pletcher trainee.

2009 Lexington Stakes - Advice [02:05]
Six weeks ago WinStar Farm looked as though it would be without a starter in the upcoming Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Now, the powerful outfit could have three, the final potential starter coming thanks to a eye-catching, last-to-first victory by Advice in the $300000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) April 18 on the Keeneland Polytrack. WinStar, which has had two Derby starters in each of the past three years, also owns Lanes End Stakes (gr. II) winner Hold Me Back and California-based Mr. Hot Stuff. Both colts appear headed to Louisville. Advice, who had only a maiden win to show from five lifetime starts, broke from post 11 in the 1 1/16-mile Lexington, the final major Derby prep. He was immediately steered toward the fence by Garrett Gomez, and the son of Chapel Royal was content to save ground at the back of the field until the late stages of the final turn. Still behind a wall of horses entering the lane, Advice was swung wide by Gomez for his winning move. Now in striking position at the top of the lane, the dark bay or brown colt set his sights on Square Eddie, who had made his own powerful move around the far turn to take a comfortable lead in upper stretch. Advice stormed to the front inside the sixteenth-pole and powered home for a one length score. "I actually had a good trip from the 11-hole," said Gomez. "(Square Eddie) kind of got left (at the starting gate), it looked like. I just kind of clocked him the whole way and followed him ...

1999 Goodwood BC Handicap - Budroyale [02:28]
A Boston Red Sox fan since he was 8 years old, Ted West hit the daily double Saturday. His baseball team got back into the American League playoffs and his durable gelding, Budroyale, earned a ticket for the Breeders' Cup by knocking off General Challenge in the $498000 Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita. Ted H. West, Ted West's son, trains Budroyale now, having taken over the stable in April when his father got into trouble with California racing authorities, but the Wests will go to Florida as a team when they try to duplicate Saturday's upset in the $4-million Breeders' Cup Classic at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 6. Ted West, 62, turned over 24 horses and Budroyale to his son when he was fined $12000 and suspended for 90 days after eight of his horses that ran in 1998 tested positive for the controversial drug clenbuterol. Horses can train but not race on the drug in California. One of West's positives came after a win by Budroyale at Hollywood Park. "We don't give it to Budroyale anymore, we'd be crazy to after what they did to me," the elder West said. "But I still believe in the medication--I think it's good for horses--and Kentucky, which is about 100 years ahead of California, just recently came out with clenbuterol rules that make more sense." It was the trainer's father who spent $50000 to claim Budroyale from trainer Nick Canani as the California-bred was winning a race at Santa Anita in February 1998. That was the last in a succession of claims for ...
