Long Run Wins William Hill King George VI Chase 26.12.2012 [07:48]
Horse Racing - Long Run wins second King George VI Chase. Long Run held off a spirited challenge from Captain Chris to win the King George VI Chase for the second time in two years at Kempton. The Nicky Henderson trained horse looked set for a comfortable victory, having taken the lead a mile from the finishing post. But a late charge from Richard Johnson aboard Captain Chris saw him jump into the lead at the last hurdle only for Sam Waley-Cohen to produce as last ditch effort to over-haul his rival with two strides to go. "He was so brave," said Waley-Cohen, who also rode Long Run to victory in the delayed 2010 edition of the race and finished runner-up in 2011. "We wanted to take the sting out of everything else and I asked so much, but he was so brave. "This is his fifth year of competing at this level and he means an enormous amount to us. "That was racing at its best to my mind, that's why we do it. I can't put it into words -- it's an honour and a pleasure." Grand Crus finished third almost a mile back. "It was a brave call to go on when he did and it was the right call to make," Henderson said. "It was a battle out there today and not the best ground for any of them. He's young but has been doing everything right. "You would have to say last year was a disappointment but he's been running good races all the time."

The Aspire Zone in Doha witnessed "Bladerunner", beating an Arabian horse as part of the 'Definitely Able' campaign which uses special events to highlight the exceptional feats Paralympic athletes are capable of. Reporter question: "Oscar, how was it?" Oscar Pistorius: "I think you know, for what it's... it wasn't about who won today, it was just about coming out here and really just showing people that those (people) with disabilities are not to be stereotyped against... Having the Arab horse out here, which is a symbolisation of strength and power in this region... To be able to do a showcase event like this is a lot of fun. So thanks to everybody who came out here, it was a good night and hopefully it will do a lot to change the perceptions of people with disabilities in this region." Several noted athletes have pitted themselves against animal opposition with limited success over the years. Welsh sprinter Jamie Baulch and American legend Jesse Owens have both raced against horses, while Pistorius' compatriot, rugby player Bryan Habana, once ran against ...
