1999 Haskell Invitational Grade I [04:49]
It was a three-wide move on the last turn, made with parabolic precision, that not only dusted Cat Thief and Forestry, but perhaps also kicked dirt on any sentiments that Charismatic had won the crown as the best 3-year-old in the nation. The horse responsible was Menifee. His hardly surprised rider was Pat Day, in the $1 million Grade I Haskell Invitational today at Monmouth Park. What does it mean? That three at-the-wire finishes can be deceptive. That anyone who penciled in Charismatic, the courageous Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, as the best of his generation needs an eraser. That Menifee's trainer, Elliott Walden, concluded a day that those with professional horse fantasies dream about. Less than an hour before Menifee ran down a pair of West Coast speedsters here, Walden's Ecton Park romped in the mud and ran away from a Grade II Jim Dandy field at Saratoga Springs. ''I knew he had won at the eighth pole,'' Walden said of Menifee's fifth career victory, his third this year, to move the colt's earnings past $1.5 million. The 33056 people who braved gloomy skies and early-morning showers may not have been so sure. The Derby and Preakness runner-up, Menifee still trailed a game Cat Thief, who was neck to neck with a determined Forestry in the stretch. ''I felt very good all the way, to be honest with you,'' said Day, who won his first Haskell and ran Menifee's record over the second-place Cat Thief to 5-0. ''I think if we run three more times, Menifee would beat ...

1991 Haskell Invitational [02:41]
Unraced for seven weeks following his Belmont Stakes victory, Hansel ran as if he were an out-of-shape athlete in the Monmouth Park stretch today. The sleek-looking bay finished more than 13 lengths back, in third place, in the $500000 Haskell Invitational Handicap, which was captured by Lost Mountain. Corporate Report was second by a head. The crowd, impressed with Hansel's seven-length victory in the Preakness, which he followed with a gritty head decision over Strike the Gold in the Belmont, poured more than $104000 onto his nose. Hansel went off as the 1-2 favorite. Although placed close to the front-running Corporate Report, he faded in the stretch. "Hansel ran a good race but, you know, he was away seven weeks and they didn't have him at his best," suggested the winning jockey, Craig Perret. Jerry Bailey, aboard Hansel, found he had a luxury horse who had suddenly lost the greatness he displayed at Belmont on June 8. "When Corporate Report moved, I asked Hansel for more, but he was just empty," said Bailey. There may have been another factor in addition to Hansel's layoff. Hansel couldn't get to the front even though he broke from the rail. Instead, Corporate Report quickly took command, while Private Man raced on the outside, boxing in Hansel. "He's a funny horse," Perret said of Hansel. "He's comfortable when free, but confused when boxed in." The track was labeled "good" after being "muddy" for the early races. The first five races were captured by front-runners ...

The CASE for Rachel Alexandra - HORSE OF THE YEAR [01:13]
The case for Rachel Alexandra as 2009 Horse of the Year. Zenyatta is an AWESOME horse, but since we can only have one Horse of the Year, it will have to be Rachel Alexandra, because Rachel had a better campaign in 2009.
