Pacing Horse Showing The standardbred is recognised for its ability to race in harness, either at a trot or a pace, rather than under a saddle in jump and flat races. This breed of horse was developed in North America and its unique characteristics make it an ideal competitor in harness races. The standardbred has a well-muscled, long body; however, it is smaller and heavier than the thoroughbred. With its solid legs and powerful shoulders, the standardbred is perfectly suited for the pulling of the sulky (term for the cart used in harness racing). Dunkeld Cup 2012 by Landserv & Campolina [07:11]
With thanks to Landserv and Campolina, we traveled to the 2012 Dunkeld Cup, in the Grampians, Victoria to experience a day in the Life of a Thoroughbred Horse Trainer. Campolina owned and trained Tayla Lee, a grey mare, ran in race 8 and was accompanied on her trip by an enthusiastic crew from Campolina, including owner Ian Bell & Trainer Andrew Dillon. This story gives a little insight into not only the huge effort and dedication required to successfully campaign a thorough bred but also the excitement of race day from the perspective of those who are directly involved -- not just making a punt from the fence! It's insightful & its exciting -- I hope you enjoy it!!
