Buckpasser - 1966 Horse Of The Year [11:49]
Buckpasser (1963--1978) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won nine of his eleven race starts for international record winnings for a two-year-old of $586090. He was leading broodmare sire in 1983, 1984 and 1989. Buckpasser was a bay colt that was bred and owned by Ogden Phipps and foaled at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He was by the Horse of the Year winner Tom Fool, and his dam was the stakes-winning mare Busanda, by the Triple Crown winner War Admiral. Busanda's second dam was the Blue Hen broodmare La Troienne (FR). He was a half-brother to several other horses that included the stakes-winners Bupers (won $221688) and Bureaucracy ($156635). Buckpasser was inbred in the fourth generation (4m x 4f) to the French racehorse and an influential sire Teddy. Racing official Dr. Manual Gilman said of him, "Generally, every horse has about a hundred faults of conformation. I would defy anybody to pick a flaw in Buckpasser." Renowned horse painter Richard Stone Reeves said, "Buckpasser was the most perfectly proportioned Thoroughbred I have ever seen." Only two horses, Secretariat and Affirmed, have since been "in a class with Buckpasser". en.wikipedia.org

Grand National Fences To Be Made Safer. [02:11]
Fences at this year's Grand National are being made safer in the biggest change in the history of the race. They are among a number of measures aimed at dealing with accusations of animal cruelty after eight horses died in the last decade. Last year the joint favourite and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Synchronised had to be put down after falling at fence six of the Grand National - the infamous Becher's Brook - and continuing riderless until suffering leg fractures. The death, along with that of outsider According to Pete, who was brought down at the same fence on the second circuit, led to calls from animal welfare groups for the Grand National to be banned. The new fences are still covered in spruce but wooden posts have been replaced by a softer material known as "plastic birch". Aintree racecourse manager Andrew Tulloch described the birch as "horse friendly", telling Sky News "safety at Aintree is always our top priority for riders and horses and it's something we do not stand still on". He said the changes should make the Grand National safer but not any easier, insisting the fences will remain the same height. "The outward appearance of these fences will remain the same. "The big change here is that traditionally where they had a timber frame to them that timber frame has been replaced by a plastic, more forgiving, birch and on top of that birch there's a minimum of fourteen, maybe even sixteen inches of spruce and the spruce is what the horses can knock off," he ...

Landaluce Educe Racing's 2013 Broodmare Band Portraits [14:02]
BROODMARE PORTRAIT PHOTO SHOOT This video captures the effort and manner by which all of our broodmares and N1 had their portraits taken in February. The goal is to get the filly in full sunlight with the dark background of the barn to help her stand out and provide definition. The filly's head is angled between 20 and 45° for two different photos. One will show the brass nameplate on the halter and the other is more of a head-on shot. The photo is taken at an angle to give depth perception to the filly's body. Shown in this session are: The groom, Tina who was drafted to work the reflector, Wendy - Matt's wife and a talented photographer but today is working on getting the horses attention to get their ears perked and alert, and Matt taking the photos. The reflector puts soft light on the dark side of the filly to highlight the brass nameplate on the halter and gives light to the filly's eye. Wendy has a recording of various barnyard animals to grab the horse's attention. It is a process, but when the moment is right a portrait to remember is captured. Niji's Grand Girl (Candy Ride), Volcat (After Market), Mazzy (Giant's Causeway), and Niji's Foal (Giant's Causeway) each have their portraits taken. The video is 14 minutes long, but captures all that went into the hour spent getting the portraits. Music: Groove Armada - 'Edge Hill,' 'Little By Little,' 'My Friend.'
