With another Preakness upon us, thoroughbred horseracing takes center stage at Pimlico and across the state. But after the race is over, Maryland's horseracing industry faces long odds and questions about its future. Horse owners find it increasingly hard to make a living in Maryland, with more racing dates and greater purses being offered in neighboring states. Breeders are turning more and more to diversification to make ends meet. And bettors make their wages in parlors for simulcasts from other venues. Could racing disappear in the future? WYPR takes a look at the state of horseracing with a five-part radio series, "Down The Stretch: The Future of Maryland's Horseracing Future," starting Monday during "Morning Edition" on 88-1, WYPR -- your NPR news station. Ninebanks defeats nemesis Surprise Halo in the 2003 Golden Gate Breeders' Cup Handicap [02:54]
Ninebanks, having already defeated Surprise Halo in the 2002 California Turf Championship at Bay Meadows, defeated his rival once again with a hard-fought victory in the 2003 Grade 3 Golden Gate Fields Breeders' Cup Handicap. Ninebanks would later get the best of Surprise Halo when won the Grade 2 San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile and when he posted an a repeat score in the 2003 California Turf Championship. Ron "The Turf King" Warren, Jr. rode Ninebanks to victory for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Halo Cat Regains the Winning Thread in the 2003 Montclair at Golden Gate Fields [01:50]
Halo Cat, who followed his victory in the Albany Handicap with runner-up efforts in the Oakland and Lafayette handicaps, returned to the winner's circle with a three-length victory in the Montclair Handicap. Ridden by Russell Baze for Jerry Hollendorfer in the Montclair, Halo Cat tracked the fast pace set by Our Magistrate and Oakland winner El Dorado Shooter and blew by his fatigued foes at the top of the stretch.
