1991 Haskell Invitational [02:41]
Unraced for seven weeks following his Belmont Stakes victory, Hansel ran as if he were an out-of-shape athlete in the Monmouth Park stretch today. The sleek-looking bay finished more than 13 lengths back, in third place, in the $500000 Haskell Invitational Handicap, which was captured by Lost Mountain. Corporate Report was second by a head. The crowd, impressed with Hansel's seven-length victory in the Preakness, which he followed with a gritty head decision over Strike the Gold in the Belmont, poured more than $104000 onto his nose. Hansel went off as the 1-2 favorite. Although placed close to the front-running Corporate Report, he faded in the stretch. "Hansel ran a good race but, you know, he was away seven weeks and they didn't have him at his best," suggested the winning jockey, Craig Perret. Jerry Bailey, aboard Hansel, found he had a luxury horse who had suddenly lost the greatness he displayed at Belmont on June 8. "When Corporate Report moved, I asked Hansel for more, but he was just empty," said Bailey. There may have been another factor in addition to Hansel's layoff. Hansel couldn't get to the front even though he broke from the rail. Instead, Corporate Report quickly took command, while Private Man raced on the outside, boxing in Hansel. "He's a funny horse," Perret said of Hansel. "He's comfortable when free, but confused when boxed in." The track was labeled "good" after being "muddy" for the early races. The first five races were captured by front-runners ...

1995 Early Times Manhattan Handicap Grade I [05:05]
Awad rallied from last to first to nose Blues Traveller at the wire in the Grade I $500000-added Early Times Manhattan over the mile and a quarter inner-turf course. "This is a mile-and-a-half horse," said Dave Donk, Awad's trainer. "So this is a huge race for him. He's got to get lucky, he needs pace, and he got it." The final time of 1:58 2/5 was eye popping --just four ticks off the track record. And Awad returned $16.20 for a $2 win bet. But a photo was needed to separate the two. "I was just screaming, 'Come on wire, come on wire,' " said Chris mccarron, who rode Blues Traveller.
