Before they were stars: Lava Man, My Creed, and Epic Power compete at Bay Meadows [02:42]
A May 16, 2004 turf allowance for 3-year-olds at Bay Meadows was won by Soccer Dan (who was owned in part by track announcer Tony Calo), but it would be three other entrants who would go on to bigger and better things. Lava Man, the runner-up, became the first horse since Native Diver to win the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup three consecutive years and remains the only horse to have won Grade 1 races on dirt, turf, and synthetic. He retired with over $5.2 million in earnings. My Creed, the third place finisher, went on to win four stakes, including the Emerald Downs Breeders' Cup Derby and the Grade 3 Berkeley Stakes. Epic Power, fourth that day, would later capture three stakes in Southern California, including the 2006 Cal Cup Mile, and earn $778173 in his career.
