"Wow! What A Filly!" - Mossflower - 1998 Hempstead Handicap [04:01]
Her name is Mossflower, she is a 4-year-old daughter of the Triple Crown champion Affirmed, and she streaked across the horizon at Belmont Park yesterday like a shooting star. Mossflower stayed undefeated by winning her sixth straight race in the sort of performance that grows with time. She outran five of the finest fillies in the land by 12 lengths and more, closed with a furious rush to break the record for the Hempstead Handicap and came within two-fifths of a second of matching the track record for a mile and one-sixteenth. And she did it all in the first stakes race she ever ran. The true measure of her success might be judged by the caliber of the fillies she outran, in this order: Glitter Woman, who has finished in the money in 15 of her 16 starts; Colonial Minstrel, who had a five-race winning streak; Ajina, last year's 3-year-old champion filly; Dixie Flag, a speed horse who had won three of her last four, and Royal Indy, winner of the Gazelle last summer at Belmont. After half a mile, Mossflower was running dead last in this all-star field, and she was still fourth after three-quarters of a mile. Then they turned into the homestretch, and Robbie Davis called for closing speed. In a flash, Mossflower blew past Dixie Flag and Glitter Woman, shot from fourth place to first, widened her lead to two lengths in the stretch and widened it to major daylight as they neared the wire. She closed her breathtaking performance 12 lengths in front of Glitter Woman, who nosed ...

Olympic Opening Ceremony 1956 Stockholm Equestrian Games (Amateur Footage) [02:23]
After the IOC awarded the Games of the XVIth Olympiad to Melbourne in Victoria, Australia they learned that Australian quarantine laws required a six-month quarantine period for horses entering the country. As the six-month quarantine made it impractical for competitors horses to be transported to Australia, this precluded Melbourne from being able to host the equestrian events at the 1956 Olympic Games. It was decided, actually in violation of the Olympic Charter, to contest separate Equestrian Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden, from 10 through 17 June 1956. At the 50th IOC Session in Athens on 13 May 1954, Stockholm was chosen to host the Equestrian Olympics over Paris, France; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Berlin, Germany; and Los Angeles, California, USA. The 1956 Equestrian Games were held without major political incidents, although some would occur a few months later and affect the Games in Melbourne in November. The opening ceremony was quite unusual as all competitors came in on their mounts, including the flag bearers. Hans Wikne brought the Olympic Flame into the stadium on horseback and lit the main torch. Karin Lindberg and Henry Eriksson held lighted torches, ran towards the stadium tower with the torches and lit flames there. Sweden's Henri Saint Cyr recited the oath of the athletes while on his horse, and later won two gold medals in individual and team dressage. This was matched by Germany's Hans Günter Winkler, who won gold medals in the individual and team ...

New York Watch: Funfair [01:30]
Trainer Christophe Clement, who in recent years has won major turf races for older horses like the Arlington Million, Beverly D., Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational, Man o' War, Shadwell Turf Mile, Sword Dancer Invitational, and Woodford Reserve Manhattan, continued his strong run with 2-year-olds during the 2012 Belmont spring/summer meet when Funfair debuted a 3 ½-length winner on the inner turf course. "This is a faster group of 2-year-olds [for me] than usual," said Clement, who unleashed impressive dirt winner Native One on July 4 and was second on the turf with Apple Cider on June 29. "It's nice for them to be doing well during this time of the year." Funfair demonstrated ample speed herself, dueling with Priscilla Marie, the lone starter with previous racing experience, to the furlong marker before shaking clear of the runner-up while being hand-ridden to the wire. Priscilla Marie was 2 ¾ lengths clear of third-place finisher Colorful Image. The final time for six furlongs was 1:08.63. Funfair paid $8.80 for a $2 win wager as the 3-1 second choice.
