1997 Preakness Stakes - Full Broadcast [01:08:08]
Silver Charm, who won the Kentucky Derby over Captain Bodgit by the length of his gray head, provided a smashing encore today when he won the 122d Preakness by the same head over Free House, with Captain Bodgit third by another head in a three-horse blanket finish. And he set the stage for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks, when he will be racing to become the first colt in 19 years to sweep the Triple Crown. The three rivals re-enacted their photo-finish performances of two weeks ago before 88594 spectators at Pimlico Race Course with a slight reshuffling of the order behind Silver Charm -- but with the same tingling drive to the wire -- in the closest Preakness in 65 years. The top three once more delivered a formful race, outrunning the leading outsider, Touch Gold, who did not appear in the Derby and who stumbled badly at the start of the Preakness. He closed to finish fourth, within 1 1/4 lengths of the three front-runners flying at the head of the field of 10. 'And we're going for the Triple Crown,'' shouted Bob Lewis, the California beer distributor who owns Silver Charm with his wife, Beverly. ''We need this badly in thoroughbred racing. May the best horse win at Belmont Park.'' Silver Charm is the first horse to have a chance at the Triple Crown in the Belmont since 1989, when Sunday Silence lost the Belmont to Easy Goer, whom he had outrun in the Derby and the Preakness. 1986 Belmont Stakes - Part 3 [05:51]
The railbirds began chanting ''Woody! Woody! Woody!'' in midstretch, as Danzig Connection under Chris McCarron pulled away to win the 118th Belmont Stakes yesterday and provide his trainer, Woody Stephens, with his fifth straight and most improbable winner of the final leg of the Triple Crown. Said Stephens: "The track was sloppy for the Belmont and Danzig Connection moved with Charlie's horse (the Charlie Whittingham-trained Ferdinand). He just opened up when they came to him and no one was going to get him if they had gone around again. "I think this win gave me the most satisfaction because here was a horse with a chip in his knee, and I nominated him to all three Triple Crown races knowing I couldn't make the Derby or the Preakness."
