1995 Blue Grass Stakes [12:23]
While the power horses of East and West stalked and chased, and while a medical miracle named Randy Romero hunched down in the saddle, a 30-1 long shot named Wild Syn led every step of the way today to win the Blue Grass Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths over Suave Prospect. And, while doing so, he royally scrambled the traffic on the road to the Kentucky Derby. No horse in the race was given less chance to win, yet no horse in the race ever got in front of him. He simply set a tantalizing pace that no jockey challenged, and at the end of a mile and one-eighth he still had the lead over some of the ranking candidates for the Derby: Suave Prospect, who held off the late run by Tejano Run by the length of his head, and then Thunder Gulch two lengths farther back. No match race developed between Thunder Gulch and Suave Prospect, as expected. No winning drive to the wire in the homestretch by Tejano Run, as expected. No clarifying of the Derby picture, as expected. And with the Canadian champion Talkin Man blitzing the field in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in New York -- three weeks after he won the Gotham -- the Derby sweepstakes underwent a mighty one-day shakeout. Instead, at the picturesque Keeneland track in the heart of the horse country, it was all Wild Syn. He was running in only his second stakes race, guided by a jockey who retired last year after a career filled with injuries and at least three comebacks and saddled by a 26-year-old trainer, Thomas Arnemann. Not only that ...
Black Caviar, Hickstead & Frankel; Hallelujah [02:46]
I lie. this isn't NCIS sorry! :3 finished this instead. Three great names, from separate parts of the world, each horse a champion in their own. I just like the music ok. lyrics here are not important honestly. Just enjoy these three great equine legends and be glad that you lived to see them perform. Horses like this don't come around often, and it's almost all over. So just be glad that it happened because in half a century we will be trying to line horses up next to these. Before you ask, the song is the Safetysuit version and ughhh, LOVE. And may the gods of all things horsey use their almighty powers to have black caviar stride down the famous flemington racecourse one more time!
1989 Alabama Stakes [03:38]
For those hard-to-please critics who had been complaining that Open Mind is a brilliant horse with a bland style, the 3-year-old filly responded with a gritty performance on a rainy day at Saratoga. At the top of the stretch of the $232400 Alabama Stakes, Open Mind's chances appeared to be as gloomy as the day itself. She was ahead of only one horse, stablemate Lea Lucinda. She trailed the front-running Dearly Loved by more than five lengths and was running in the middle of the track, where the muddy surface had the consistency of butterscotch pudding. Open Mind had gone into Saturday's 109th Alabama with a nine-race winning streak dating to last November, but now, at 1-5 odds, she looked hopelessly beaten. Her critics were ready to add Open Mind's name to the list of fallen Saratoga favorites, which includes Man o' War, Gallant Fox and Secretariat. Before a crowd of 30309, Open Mind chose not to become a part of that gallery. "Of all the fillies I've ridden," Angel Cordero would say later, "I've never been on one who tries as hard as this filly. If she were a person, she'd want to work seven days a week." Cordero went to his whip 16 times--seven times from the right and nine from the left--and it took that 16th whack to get owner Gene Klein's filly to the wire, a neck before Dearly Loved. Open Mind might win 10 more races in a row, if she is allowed to stay on the track long enough, but no victory will come any harder than Saturday's. Jean Cruguet was aboard Dearly Loved ...
