1990 Pimlico Special : ABC Broadcast [17:41]
Criminal Type scored a far-reaching victory in the Pimlico Special Saturday. The 5-year-old son of Alydar ran the fastest 1 3/16 miles in Pimlico history, sent his trainer, Wayne Lukas, over the $100-million mark in career purses and exposed a story about how fine the line is between being a hero and a heel as a jockey's agent. Under Jose Santos, who was riding him for the first time, Criminal Type shadowed Ruhlmann all the way around, edged past him with about 50 yards left and won by a neck in the first $1-million race ever run in Maryland. Ruhlmann, the second betting choice at 2-1, finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of De Roche, a 34-1 shot who finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of Mi Selecto. Opening Verse, made the 3-2 favorite by a crowd of 15850 on a cool, overcast day, flattened out in the stretch and wound up fifth, beaten by about 3 1/4 lengths. Wind Splitter finished sixth, and after him in the 10-horse field came Silver Survivor, Gorgeous, With Approval and Music Merci. Criminal Type's time was 1:53, breaking by a fifth of a second the record that Blushing John set in winning the Special last year. The Special is the same distance as the Preakness, which will be run here next Saturday, and the fastest Preakness times have been Secretariat's unofficial 1:53 2/5 clocking in 1973 and Tank's Prospect's matching time in 1985. Criminal Type was the fourth betting choice and paid $17.40, $6.80 and $5.20. Ruhlmann paid $4.80 and $4.60, and De Roche's show price was $10.20. A ...
1989 Norfolk Stakes [00:51]
Wayne Lukas saddled Grand Canyon Sunday for a 1 1/2-length victory, and the next race for the $825000 yearling is the Breeders' Cup competition for 2-year-old colts, which will be run Nov. 4 at Gulfstream Park. "Capote went into the Breeders' Cup more seasoned than this colt, but this horse is a lot stronger than Capote was," Lukas said. "The thing is, though, it's been tough to evaluate the 2-year-olds this year. "We won't be able to tell until we get them all on the same track. You'll have to take a hard look at the past performances before you can sort them out." Grand Canyon, who is by Fappiano out of Champagne Ginny, a L'Enjoleur mare, may be joined by two horses from Lukas' New York division--Richard R. and Sir Richard Lewis--in the Juvenile. Chris McCarron, who rode Grand Canyon in the Norfolk, was aboard Richard R. for his fourth-place finish in the Champagne at Belmont Park Saturday. Single Dawn, trying to give trainer Ron McAnally his third major victory in two days, finished second to Grand Canyon, 3 1/2 lengths ahead of the third-place finisher, 62-1 shot Due to the King. The crowd of 31319 had to wait several minutes before the stewards disallowed a foul claim by Corey Nakatani, the rider of Due to the King, who said his mount lost momentum when Grand Canyon came over in front of them in mid-stretch. Grand Canyon collected $166440 of the $277440 purse for Lukas and his partner, William T. Young of Lexington, Ky. Grand Canyon ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43 1/5 ...
1997 Florida Derby [02:55]
Captain Bodgit stole the thunder from Pulpit yesterday, roaring down the stretch to capture the $500000 Florida Derby and throw the Kentucky Derby watch into an uproar. Pulpit, formerly undefeated and the 2-5 choice, ran well under Shane Sellers to finish second, but he was no match for Captain Bodgit, who authored a bold move around the far turn with Alex Solis, coming from sixth place to prevail by 2 1/2 lengths at 7-2. The time for the mile and an eighth was an ordinary 1:50 3/5, following fractions of :23 1/5, :47 3/5, 1:12 and 1:37 2/5, over a track officially labeled as "fast."
