(2012) Kentucky Derby - "I'll Have Another" Wins -- Preakness is Next The 138th Kentucky Derby was the running of the Kentucky Derby in 2012, and took place on May 5 at 6.24 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) at Churchill Downs. Due to sponsorship, the race was known as the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands. The race was televised in the United States on the NBC television network. Prior to the race, the field was considered "unusually strong"; four time Derby winning trainer D. Wayne Lukas called it the "best bunch I've seen in a long time". The race was won by I'll Have Another, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, with a time of 2.01.83, while favorite Bodemeister finished second and Dullahan was third. A record crowd of 165307 was on hand at the track for the race. I'll Have Another (foaled April 1, 2009) is a North American Thoroughbred race horse, bred in Kentucky, owned by Canadian businessman J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O'Neill. In May 2012, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, he won the first two legs of the Triple Crown by taking the Kentucky Derby with a time of 2.1.83. and the Preakness Stakes in 1.55.94. 2012: three-year-old season... I'll Have Another began his three-year-old season by winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita on February 4, as a 43/1 outsider.
