1987 Dwyer Stakes [03:07]
Gone West, who floundered while trying to provide Woody Stephens with his sixth straight Belmont Stakes winner last month, won back his national prominence yesterday with a 12 1/2-length triumph over Pledge Card and Polish Navy in the $230400 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park. Gone West benefited from a drying track that favored front-runners and rail-runners, but was still very impressive and clearly the best horse in the field. Polish Navy outbroke him, but Gone West shot up on the inside to take the lead within the first quarter-mile and the duel was over. The Dwyer was only the third victory of the Belmont meeting for Stephens, the first coming when Gone West won the opening-day Withers Stakes on May 6. ''He looked like a race horse today,'' Stephens said of Gone West ...
