New York Watch: Ruthenia [02:01]
Ruthenia has a high bar to clear if she wants to duplicate the success achieved by her full-sister, but an impressive debut at Belmont Park is a pretty good start. Despite her pedigree, the daughter of Pulpit was dismissed at 20-1 on Monday in a one-mile event on Belmont's Widener turf course, and the full-sister to the 2005 Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks winner Rutherienne made her doubters pay by drawing off under Alan Garcia's hand encouragement to win by 3 ½ lengths. Ruthenia, who covered the distance in 1:37.40 and ran the final quarter mile in a snappy 23.34 seconds, becomes the latest horse to join the New York Watch, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga. "There was no reason for her to have been a long price," trainer Christophe Clement said of Ruthenia, who races for her breeder, Virginia Kraft Payson. "Good for the guys who picked her! She had trained well and had shown a good turn of foot in the morning. Even though she is smaller, she moved well." Clement and Payson were also the team behind Rutherienne, who won 10 stakes in her career, including the Sugar Plum Time, Grade 3 Sands Point, Grade 3 Lake George, and Grade 3 Noble Damsel Handicap in New York. Off the board just four times in 20 starts, Rutherienne earned nearly $1.3 million. "Rutherienne was also small," said Clement when asked to compare Ruthenia to her older sister. "She was sometimes difficult to train, as some of the Pulpits are ...

JP's Gusto - 2010 Del Mar Futurity [03:06]
DEL MAR, Calif. -- Trying to beat JP's Gusto, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has found out, is difficult with just one bullet. So when the Grade 1, $250000 Del Mar Futurity is run on Wednesday's closing-day card here, Hollendorfer will put a couple of rounds in the chamber, hoping either Indian Winter or Western Mood can knock off the pro-tem leader of the 2-year-old division in California. It will not be easy. JP's Gusto heads into the Futurity riding a three-race winning streak, including a victory one month ago in the 6 1/2-furlong Best Pal Stakes, Del Mar's major prep for the Futurity. But JP's Gusto will be trying to stretch his speed to seven furlongs, which, with his sprint-based pedigree, might be the outer limits of his optimum range. Western Mood was a distant third in the Best Pal after losing by just a neck to JP's Gusto in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship. The biggest threat from Hollendorfer's barn just might be Indian Winter, an Indian Charlie colt who, when closing sharply to win his debut going six furlongs Aug. 21, acted like he would appreciate more distance. "The thing I liked about his race is that he was down inside, taking a lot of stuff flying at him, and it didn't bother him at all," Hollendorfer said. "He acted like an older horse. He won by a half-length, but I think he was best by a lot more than that." Hollendorfer's biggest concern is that he is coming back in just 18 days. But the lure of a Grade 1 race, versus sitting on the sidelines until ...

2010 Del Mar Futurity -JP'S GUSTO [03:06]
JP's Gusto, who we wrote about as one of our top 2-year olds to watch (prior to Kantharos being retired), will take a 3-race win streak into this Wednesday's $250000 Del Mar Futurity. The Del Mar Futurity, featuring JP's Gusto, will headline the closing day at Del Mar. An exceptional horse racing meet, with great track architecture, and coastal view of the Pacific, and nestled snuggly in the small suburb of San Diego, Del Mar is one of our favorite meets of the year. JP's Gusto will face off again against his rival Western Mood, this time stretching out to 7-furlongs. Many are skeptical about that distance, and although it's no where near the typical two turn classic that most strive for, it could still be the outer bounds of his pedigree distance.

Curlinello maiden debut 8-21-10 [03:36]
Curlinello won over the speed favoring Saratoga track on August 21, going 7F in 1:24.53. He's a full brother to Arlington Classic winner Pleasant Strike, but has a strong dirt pedigree, especially for the mud. This is a colt with the pedigree to enjoy two turns and the clout of a distaff family to make him a serious horse to watch.
