Gary Seibel, a veteran harness racing broadcaster, has helped bring the sport to national prominence as television's premier and most recognized host and racing authority for two decades running. The 2012 edition of the Hambletonian marked his 20th consecutive year as either host or co-host of harness racing's most prestigious event, including a 13-year run on CBS and a 5-year stint with NBC. For more than a decade, he hosted network TV coverage of the Breeders Crown, harness racing's divisional championship series, and filled a similar role for the American Championship Harness Series back in the late 1990's. Seibel also has covered racing for ESPN, SportsChannel and Prime Network. He brought the sport of harness racing into the living rooms of fans across America on a daily basis from 1999 through 2011 as a host and racing analyst for the popular nightly program, "Drive Time," on TVG, the interactive horse racing network. In 1998, in one of his most memorable -- and fun -- forays outside the world of horse racing, the Bronx, New York, native took over for the late Hall of Fame broadcaster, Chris Schenkel, as play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports' network coverage of the Pro Bowlers Tour. Saratoga All Access: 12th annual Travers Celebration [02:59]
The 12th annual Travers Celebration -- the premier evening affair at Saratoga Race Course -- returned once again to celebrate the arrival of the 143rd edition of the mid-summer derby on Thursday, August 23. The official party of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers, the Travers Celebration supports the Backstretch Employee Service Team, the Times Union Hope Fund and its newest beneficiary, the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. The elaborate event featured exquisite food stations and beverage offerings, a live and silent auction, and dancing to live music from the New York Players. Event attendees also had the opportunity to have their photo taken with the official trophy of the Travers. Recently appraised at $425000, the 18k gold permanent trophy of Travers designed by Tiffany & Co. is inscribed with all past winners' names. The Travers Celebration has raised more than $1.1 million for non-profit organizations in the thoroughbred industry and throughout the greater Capital Region since its inception over a decade ago. The 2012 Travers Celebration is co-chaired by Mr. George R. Hearst III, Publisher and CEO of the Times Union newspaper; and Mrs. Sharon Dominguez, wife of Ramon Dominguez, winner of the 2011 and 2012 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey.
