Toby's Corner - Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial (G1) [02:08]
Toby's Corner rallied from last to storm past a tiring Uncle Mo and outkick Arthur's Tale in the final jumps of Saturday's 87th edition of the Grade 1, $1 million Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack. The neck victory was the race's biggest upset since Secretariat finished third to Angle Light by four lengths in 1973. Ridden by Eddie Castro, Toby's Corner, a 3-year-old son of 2005 Wood winner Bellamy Road, stayed on the rail as 1-10 favorite Uncle Mo led the field through an opening half-mile in 47.98, three-quarters in 1:12.28 and a mile in 1:37.26 while under pressure from a trio of longshots. Advancing steadily after having been shuffled back to last at the half-mile pole, Toby's Corner kicked into gear once tipped to the outside in the stretch. As Uncle Mo began to tire, Toby's Corner moved up along with Arthur's Tale and surged to the front in the final yards to hit the wire in 1:49.93 for the 1 1/8 miles. Uncle Mo, the 2010 Eclipse winner as the nation's Top 2-Year-Old Male and the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, finished third, another length back, as he suffered his first loss in five starts. "I can't say I'm shocked but I'm disappointed," said Todd Pletcher, who trains Uncle Mo for Mike Repole. "I was a little concerned turning for home at the three-sixteenths pole when he didn't really kick clear. I thought then that we were going to be in for a fight. You could see the last 50-60 yards he was tired." "He came a little flat ...

To Honor and Serve - The Remsen (G2) [02:10]
Promising 2-year-old To Honor and Serve took another step forward Saturday, posting a gate-to-wire victory in the Grade 2, $200000 Remsen at Aqueduct Racetrack. To Honor and Serve, who was entering today's race off a four-length success in the Grade 2 Nashua at the Big A on November 6, broke sharply and was angled over to the rail by John Velazquez on the clubhouse turn. The odds-on favorite received mild pressure from eventual runner-up Mucho Macho Man through a half in 47.69 and three quarters in 1:11.18, began to inch clear entering the lane, and was geared down late as he scored by two comfortable lengths. "I let him do whatever he wanted to do -- I didn't want to be on his mouth," said Velazquez. "He's still a big baby. He gets to the lead, and he gets to looking around. He hasn't put it all together yet." To Honor and Serve returned $3.20 for a $2 win wager as the 3-5 favorite, earned $90000 for his victory, and completed the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:50.03. The Remsen was the first start around two turns for To Honor and Serve, who broke his maiden by 8 ¾ lengths two starts back at Belmont Park on October 2. "It would have been nice to see him to have to pass somebody, but that's just the way the race turned out," said Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who trains the son of Bernardini for Live Oak Plantation. "I thought in the Nashua it looked like he won a little easier, but this was another eighth of a mile. Being in a two-turn race might have been slightly confusing to ...

Friend Or Foe - 2010 Empire Classic [02:09]
Heavily favored Friend Or Foe returned to the winner's circle Saturday afternoon with a front-running, stakes-record victory in the 35th running of the $200000 Empire Classic for New York-breds, the centerpiece of New York Showcase Day at Belmont Park. Trained by John Kimmel for Chester and Mary Broman, the 3-year-old Friends Lake colt grabbed the lead soon after the gates opened and cruised through unpressured fractions of 23.15, 46.79 and 1:10.39. Set down at the head of the lane by jockey Alex Solis, Friend Or Foe easily pulled away from his nine rivals and hit the wire five lengths in front, covering the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.94 over a fast track. His time easily eclipsed the previous record of 1:48.00 set by Instant Friendship in 1997. From 1976 through 1994, the race was called the Empire Stakes for 2-year-olds going six furlongs.

New York Watch: JB's Thunder [02:15]
JB's Thunder made some noise at Saratoga Race Course when he scored by 1 ¾-lengths in his debut, a 1 1/16th-mile event over the Mellon Turf Course on Saturday. With the victory JB Thunder joins the New York Watch, which profiles up-and-comers that have recently cleared the maiden ranks at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga. Unchallenged for the early lead, JB's Thunder was kept under a snug hold by Shaun Bridgmohan as he carved out fractions and 49.93 and 1:14.31 while receiving mild pressure from Bonaroo. After Bridgomohan shook the reins at the top of the stretch, JB's Thunder opened to a three length advantage and was never threatened as Santiva reduced the final margin to 1 ¾ lengths. "He's a sharp horse -- he's good in the gate and is very intelligent," said winning trainer Al Stall, Jr. "He had done everything right to this point, and I thought he'd lay close. I told Shaun, 'Take what they give you on the front end. He took the lead comfortably because a couple of horses took back. But if someone had gone to the lead, he would have been able to rate off of them. On the first turn I felt very good. His ears were flicking back and forth on the backside, and he was able to kick." JB's Thunder trained on dirt at Churchill Downs and at Saratoga earlier in the summer before Stall elected to try the son of Thunder Gulch on the Oklahoma Turf Course on August 11. After working four furlongs around dogs in 48.90, handily, Stall decided to keep the bay colt on the grass. "As ...

New York Watch: Hunters Bay [01:59]
Ghostzapper and Smokn Frolic won major races in New York during their racing careers, and their son 3-year-old son now has the opportunity to create his own legacy. Named Hunters Bay, the regally-bred colt became the 11th horse featured in the New York Watch series, which shines the spotlight on promising colts and fillies that have recently cleared the maiden and allowance ranks at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Fifth in his debut after breaking slowly at Gulfstream Park on April 10, Hunters Bay was ready to roll today at Belmont Park in his second start. Away alertly this time, he set fractions of :23.14 and :45.57 while receiving pace pressure from Loquacious, began to open on the field at the top of the stretch, and drew clear under a brisk hand ride to score by 8 ½ lengths. We thought stretching him out would be the key and hoped hed break a little better, said Hunters Bays trainer Todd Pletcher, who conditioned Smokn Frolic during her racing days. He was definitely more professional second time out. He comes from a pedigree that makes it look like hell improve going longer. This is a big step forward, and hopefully he continues to improve. He could have a future. Hunters Bay, the 9-2 fifth choice in the field of six, covered the 1 1/16th-mile distance in a snappy 1:41.08. While Pletcher noted how he thought the track was playing on the quick side, winning Jockey John Velazquez was awed nonetheless. They were cooking out there, said ...
