KENTUCKY DERBY 2009 horse racing [02:25]
KENTUCKY Derby vsako prvo soboto v maju predstavlja vrhunec celotedenskega konjeniškega spektakla v mestu Louisville v ameriški zvezni državi Kentucky, kjer se domačini radi pohvalijo, da gre za konjeniško prestolnico sveta. Gre za prvo izmed treh dirk (do začetka junija ji sledita še Preakness Stakes in Belmont Stakes), ki štejejo za prestižno lovoriko trojna krona. To je v njeni skoraj stoletni zgodovini uspelo osvojiti le 11 konjem in nobenemu še od leta 1978. Znamenita dirka je vsako leto priložnost, da se pridejo v vsem svojem sijaju pokazat tako krajevni veljaki kot "pravi" zvezdniki, kot so Paris Hilton, Michael Jordan... Skladno z "obstransko" konjeniško tradicijo so predvsem izstopajoči klobuki obvezna modna oprava pri ženskah, ki so letos vse po vrsti (verjetno ne gre dvomiti, da zaradi imena) za svojega najljubšega favorita izbrale žrebca Chocolate candy, ki je na koncu pristal na petem mestu. Letos je bil na dirki še vedno živ spomin na lansko tragedijo, ko se je kobila Eight Belles takoj po osvojenem drugem mestu zgrudila zaradi zlomljenih okončin in so jo morali takoj usmrtiti kar na stezi. The pride of Puerto Rico, 13 for 13 before leaving the island, proved he can compete on the mainland. The first 2-year-old to be named Horse of the Year in Puerto Rico since Bold Forbes, Mister Frisky defeated Tarascon by a length in 1:22 3/5, and it was another eight lengths back to Top Cash. In front every step in almost all of his previous races, Mister Frisky, the Marsayas colt, was fourth after breaking a step slowly. He moved up to join Tarascon, the 13-10 choice, nearing the quarter pole, then took charge and provided Stevens with his fourth winner of the day. "This is a helluva good horse," said trainer Laz Barrera, who didn't do badly after taking over Bold Forbes 14 years earlier. "This sucker can run. Youth's Pride breaking from gates (outside horse) [01:18]
This is his first time breaking from the starting gates. Before this, one of the guys actually hand opened the gate in front of him and then he came out. He hesitated compared to the other two horses who have a little more experience because he has never had the gates open without someone manually doing it--many horses react like this first time.
