1998 Alabama Stakes [06:27]
Banshee Breeze won the Alabama Stakes by six lengths over Lu Ravi, one month after winning the Coaching Club American Oaks, and inflicted defeat for the first time on Manis tique, the wonder horse from California. Both Banshee Breeze and Manistique are daughters of Unbridled, winner of the 1990 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic. But Banshee Breeze, racing for the ninth time, won for the fifth time and showed that experience often prevails over sheer brilliance. Manistique, a huge filly named for a town in Wisconsin, was racing for only the fourth time. And, although she had won each of her three starts at Hollywood Park by at least 10 lengths, she apparently had breathing problems and could not cope. Banshee Breeze has won at a mile and a half in the Coaching Club American Oaks and at a mile and a quarter in the Alabama, the filly counterpart to next Saturday's Travers Stakes. Even her jockey, Jerry Bailey, was impressed with the way she handled Manistique, the betting choice, ridden by Gary Stevens, who flew here from the West Coast for the race. ''I had a lot of horse at every point in the race,'' Bailey said, ''and I couldn't believe how she was running. I was right behind the favorite, and I wasn't sure how much horse Gary had, but I knew that he would need a lot because my filly was ready to run. This was the best that she finished, and past the wire she still had more in her. To have her this ready was just incredible.'' The man who got her ready was Carl ...

1999 Ramona Handicap [03:22]
The only Del Mar record that might approach the one trainer Bob Baffert set Saturday is jockey Bill Shoemaker's 94-win season in 1954. Among trainers, Baffert's feat stands alone. They ran five Grade I races here this summer, and Baffert won them all, concluding with Tuzla's survival in a four-horse scramble to the wire in the $400000 Ramona Handicap. To win all the Grade I's Del Mar had to offer, Baffert's stable needed a cross-section of good horses. Preceding Tuzla, a 5-year-old grass mare, were Joe Who in the Eddie Read Handicap, Tout Charmant in the Del Mar Oaks, General Challenge in the Pacific Classic and Chilukki in the Vinery Del Mar Debutante. Chilukki was the only favorite in the quintet. Tuzla, who had been favored in seven of her last eight starts, went off at 4-1 in the Ramona, having been beaten here three weeks ago and suspect at the 1 1/8-mile distance. "She's got so much heart," Baffert said. "When you have a win machine, it makes my job a lot easier. Dana Barnes, who gets on her in the mornings, got her to relax and told me the mile and an eighth would be no problem." At the wire, Tuzla was a head better than Happyanunoit, who was a head in front of Spanish Fern. Que Belle, who finished fourth, was only another neck back. Tranquility Lake, the even-money favorite, finished fifth after leading in mid-stretch. Bobby Frankel, a three-time winner of the Ramona, trains Happyanunoit and Spanish Fern, and Julio Canani, who trains Tranquility Lake, used to ...

1999 Travers Stakes [04:33]
Lemon Drop Kid supplied a smashing encore to his victory in the Belmont Stakes today when he won the 130th running of the Travers and raced to the head of this season's class of 3-year-olds. The bay son of Kingmambo actually rewrote the climax to his June script in which he held off the long shot Vision and Verse by a head before a record Belmont crowd of 85818. This time, running against three of his Triple Crown rivals and four other colts with championship ambitions, he finished three-quarters of a length in front of Vision and Verse before a record Travers crowd of 51371. Then came the warriors: Menifee, the 9-5 favorite, got trapped on the inside and ran third in front of his stablemate, Ecton Park, while the star of the D. Wayne Lukas barn, Cat Thief, finished seventh with breathing problems. So, in million-dollar landmark races less than three months apart, Lemon Drop Kid staked his claim to the leadership of the class. It was once held by Charismatic, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness before running third in the Belmont, which he finished with a fractured leg that forced his retirement. And Lemon Drop Kid's jockey, Jose Santos, was quick to assert the claim. ''He is one of the best, if not the best 3-year-old,'' Santos said. ''He won the Belmont, beat Charismatic, and now he's won the Travers. Maybe now he'll get the respect he deserves.'' Scotty Schulhofer, who trains Lemon Drop Kid for Jeanne Vance and her husband, Laddie, remembered that his horse ...

1997 Blue Grass Stakes Grade I [00:55]
There was a threat of rain. There was nervousness over a recent loss in Florida. It was a new race over a new track, and there were several new shooters trying to knock him off. But none of Pulpit's potential problems materialized. It was as if divine intervention was bestowed upon the colt, who resurrected his standing among the nation's leading 3-year-olds with an emphatic victory today in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland Race Course. Pulpit romped to a 3 1/2-length victory over Acceptable to set up a dramatic rematch with his archrival, Captain Bodgit, in the Kentucky Derby three weeks from today. Captain Bodgit and Pulpit split two meetings in Florida this winter, then went their separate ways today. One hour before Pulpit's victory, Captain Bodgit took the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in New York. ''Now we'll find out who's best,'' said Pulpit's trainer, Frank Brothers. Pulpit was at his best today. He was making his first start since his first career loss, which came when he ran second to Captain Bodgit in last month's Florida Derby. He was running for the first time anywhere other than Gulfstream Park. Two colts from California, Stolen Gold and King Crimson, were flown here to offer a fresh challenge. And overnight rain left the track muddy for the day's first race. But the combination of blustery winds and late-afternoon sunshine dried out the track. It was fast, and so was Pulpit. Pulpit stalked the early pace-setter, Jules, through comfortable fractions of 233/5 ...

New York Watch: Cocalero [02:39]
A sluggish start couldnt stop Cocalero from breaking his maiden on debut and becoming the 10th horse featured in the New York Watch series, which shines the spotlight on promising colts and fillies that have recently cleared the maiden and allowance ranks at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. By AP Indy and out of Grade 1 winner Got Koko, Cocalero, a $175000 yearling, topped the 2009 OBS Spring Sale as a juvenile when he was purchased for $675000 by John Ferguson, agent for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who raced the colt at Belmont Park under the colors of Darley Stable. Despite being coupled in the wagering along with fellow first-time starter Stratford Hill, another well-bred son of AP Indy, Cocalero received only mild betting support at 5-1. Cocalero, after loading reluctantly, reared in the starting gate. He stood still for the break, but was away several lengths slowly. It was unexpected, trainer Tom Albertrani said of Cocaleros gate problems. First time out, you never know what to expect or how they are going to act. He was really tense in the gate. Jockey Alan Garcia didnt panic, however, and let the Cocalero bide his time at the back of the pack. The bay raced with his head held high through the far turn, but got down to business once he was swung out at the top of the stretch, splitting rivals and closing strongly to win by 1 ¾ lengths. [Garcia] was really patient, and the horse was able to recover for him, said Albertrani. He ...
