co owner of Tickity Bleue Peter Gordon chats to Eliza at Cheltenham [01:14]
One of Eliza's friends Peter Gordon is co owner in a small syndicate of 'Tickity Bleue' an exciting prospect for next season trained by Alan King . She was beaten on this ocassion by Glorious Twelfth from the Nicky Henderson yard; but had beaten it on her sole run previously at Newbury. The big tests is always Cheltenham to see if a horse copes with the hill; and also they were unsure about the soft going but she handled it well. The race was a 'bumper' - an introduction to racecourse action for future jumpers but on the flat; also known as a 'National Hunt flat race'. Tickity Bleue was giving weight to Glorious Twelfth (and the rest of the runners) because of the fact she'd won before; but the latter is a 5 year old. The last race of the day on a filthy afternoon; many racegoers had departed and as a result have probably missed two of the new stars of next season...

The Hands on MD: Edward Gillespie of Cheltenham holds a quiz for racegoers [02:53]
The 'Jargon Buster' quiz is designed to enlighten ocassional and regular racegoers alike by illuminating the meaning of some of the technical expressions in the sport.. Edward Gillespie as usual gets involved hands on in the racecourse activities by chairing the quiz. Edward received a well deserved lifetime achievement award recently . His Theatre interests also probably help him in this particular activity!

Race with three Greys at Bonvilston proves popular with first time racegoers! [02:36]
One of the greys, Stoneriggs Merc, wins the race at 16/1 which was nice for several families I heard who placed small bets on it! One had not been racing since Desert Orchid as they had been abroad; but had clearly enthused their children with tales of the great grey! But watch the race through to the end. The staying on odds on favourite Kisha King is pressing him after the last; so Joseph Williams gives him a slap with the whip just to keep him going to the line. Now a small minority of people- often who have little interest in Racing or knowledge of horses worry about the whip. In fact; if you watch this video the horse comes right over to my camera and you can hear the whip and see the action close up. This should alleviate any worries - as you can see there is no way that the air cushioned whip has or can hurt or damage the horse in any way. So some say 'so why have it?' Well because horses are herd animals and use their teeth to communicate. A little nip administered by one horse will move the other horse on; or out of the way. Similarly the jockey uses the whip to keep a horse straight or keep it going or move him out of danger. Thus the stimulus of that tap of the whip has the same effect - the horse knows to keep going! As you can see from the video close up; the whip causes no problems for the horse who has a thick hair coat; but it understands to keep going. After all; while the horse clearly enjoys running; he does not know where the line is. You can see also ...
