Nascar Daytona Crash: Ten-Car Crash At Daytona Track Injures 29 [00:51]
On the last lap of the Nationwide Nascar race, competitor Regan Smith was turned sideways and took out several racers behind him, causing a pile-up. Large chunks of driver Kyle Larson's car landed in the grandstands, and one of his tyres appeared to fly over the fence and into the stands. His car went airborne when it hit the pile-up and it was flung into the fence that separates the track from the seats. The car itself had its entire front end sheared off, with the burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence. Larson managed to climb out of the wreckage afterwards unscathed. Race officials said 14 fans were taken to hospital, with another 14 being treated on the scene at the Florida track. Driver Michael Annett, of the Richard Petty Motorsports team, was being treated in hospital for bruising on his chest, his team said. Dan Wetzel, Yahoo Sports national columnist, spoke to fans in the damaged grandstand.

Large pieces of debris - including a tyre - flew into the spectator stands when one of the cars hit a fence separating the track from the seats. Race officials said 14 people had to be treated in hospital. The accident happened on the eve of the Dayton 500 - one of the most famous Nascar events. The officials later said the main race would go ahead. The President of Daytona International Speedway, Joie Chitwood, and Nascar's Steve O'Donnell addressed a press conference 'Freaky' The crash happened on the last lap of the second-tier race in Daytona as the cars approached the chequered flag. The driver in the leading car apparently tried to stop others overtaking him by moving sideways. One vehicle then hit another and flew into the fence. Pieces of debris were thrown into the stands and smoke from burning engines clouded the area. "It was freaky," fan Rick Harpster told the Associated Press news agency. "I saw a tyre fly straight over the fence into the stands. I knew it was going to be severe." Another eyewitness described people running and seeing a girl completely covered in engine oil. The race was earlier stopped for about 20 minutes following a separate accident in which one driver was injured. The crash happened on the last lap of the race Continue reading the main story Related Stories Patrick starts Daytona 500 on pole Formula 1 returns to United ...
