1999 Hopeful Stakes Grade I [04:04]
The monster of the freshman class, More Than Ready, was back in the barn resting for the battles of autumn at Belmont Park and the championships beyond. But in his place came the challengers led by High Yield, the West Coast star trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who gave More Than Ready something to think about when he won the Hopeful Stakes today at Saratoga by five lengths. High Yield is a 2-year-old chestnut son of Storm Cat, and he arrived with impeccable credentials. He ran second in his debut at Hollywood Park in July, third in a stakes race the next time and was a runaway first this afternoon. He is owned by a clutch of racing's aristocrats: Bob and Beverly Lewis, Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier. He is handled by Lukas, who has won four runnings of the Hopeful in this decade and 25 stakes for 2-year-old horses over all. And he was ridden by Jerry Bailey, the prince of jockeys. So his success today in Saratoga's climactic race for juvenile colts was no surprise. Horse Painting System [01:52]
Based on fan feedback that horses are too difficult to spot during a race, horses running at Hollywood Park will be painted the same color as their saddle towels for the upcoming Spring/Summer meet. The Horse Painting System (HPS) has received an enthusiastic response by most trainers, although some critics remain.
Response to comments: Which Tracks Cheat The Most [05:50]
I didn't mean the actually facility, building cheats lol. There are 2 ways tracks cheat but trainers and jockeys do 90% of the cheating. Tell me why all the top trainers have been suspended. Robert Frankle was suspended in 2000 for juice, 2 time eclipse award winner Steve Assmussen was suspended for juice twice. Richard Dutrow, Scott Lake, Kiaran mclaughlin have all been suspended for the times that they've actually been caught!
