Hipodrome Son Pardo, Palma, Mallorca [00:12]
Horse racing/trotitng racing - Hipodrome Son Pardo, Palma, Mallorca Europe's first floodlit racecourse, opened in 1965. Trotting races (Carreras) are held around a 1 km track at 4:30 on Sundays in winter and 9 on Friday evenings in summer. Trotting is a form of racing in which the jockey sits in a small cart behind the horse and must prevent the horse from breaking into a gallop. It has been popular in Mallorca and Menorca for at least 200 years. If you go to a race meeting, remember that betting is an essential part of the process.

1975 Grand National (Part 2 of 2) [04:44]
L'Escargot gets his revenge on Red Rum as he becomes only the second horse ever to win both a Gold Cup and a Grand National. Sadly the race is marred by the deaths of Land Lark and Beau Bob. Whilst Red Rum's fans may find this race hard to watch, it must be remembered that L'Escargot was a great horse in his own right who richly deserved this Grand National win. The way he finished he would have made a race of it with Red Rum even if they had been on level weights and Rummy would indeed get his third National win two years later.

Who won? A close call, & a rare & nail-biting photo finish in horse racing [04:01]
At Santa Anita, a major racetrack near Los Angeles, on Sat Feb 13, 2011, fans witnessed a truly remarkable effort and whisker - close finish in a 6 & a half furlong allowance sprint. Watch in the stretch where Smart Spending, (a BC bred) horse #2 on the rail with the black & white silks, gets trapped, and has to be reigned in (checked) to prevent catastrophe. When I saw this, I held my breath & braced for the worst. Next, however, I watched one of the most impressive performances in some time. What made this more satisfying was to see a BC bred and owned horse compete and run well against the big boys at Santa Anita. Hats off to jockey Garrett Gomez, and trainer Carla Gaines for helping to make this happen. I hope to see Smart Spending race again this year at Vancouver's Hastings Park. Obviously he's vastly improved since his run in the 2010 BC Derby
