Quality Road - 2010 Met Mile (G1) [02:01]
In a brilliant display of speed and talent, Quality Road staked his claim as the top horse in the country as he rocketed to a 1 ½-length victory over Musket Man Monday afternoon in the 117th running of the Grade 1, $500000 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park. Under John Velazquez and top weight of 124 pounds, the 4-year-old Elusive Quality colt dueled with longshot Le Grand Cru through fractions of 22.55 and 45.19, and then shook off a challenge from Warrior's Reward nearing the quarter-pole to open up by two lengths at the top of the stretch. Rounding the turn, Musket Man picked off five rivals as he barreled into second but through the stretch could not gain on Quality Road, who flashed under the wire in 1:33.11 for the mile. Quality Road's time tied for the second-fastest ever Met Mile behind Honour and Glory, who set the stakes record of 1:32.81 in 1996. In 1997, Langfuhr won in 1:33.11, while in 1982, before the advent of hundredths, Conquistador Cielo won in 1:33 flat. The victory was the third straight for the Edward P. Evans homebred, who was making his first start since his track record victory of 1:47.49 in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park on March 13. "He's such a versatile horse," said trainer Todd Pletcher, who earned his first victory in the Met Mile. "He set a track record at Saratoga at 6 ½ furlongs and two track records at Gulfstream at 1 1/8th miles, and he showed today he's a brilliant miler. He took the race to everyone and kept on." 1998 Alabama Stakes [06:27]
Banshee Breeze won the Alabama Stakes by six lengths over Lu Ravi, one month after winning the Coaching Club American Oaks, and inflicted defeat for the first time on Manis tique, the wonder horse from California. Both Banshee Breeze and Manistique are daughters of Unbridled, winner of the 1990 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic. But Banshee Breeze, racing for the ninth time, won for the fifth time and showed that experience often prevails over sheer brilliance. Manistique, a huge filly named for a town in Wisconsin, was racing for only the fourth time. And, although she had won each of her three starts at Hollywood Park by at least 10 lengths, she apparently had breathing problems and could not cope. Banshee Breeze has won at a mile and a half in the Coaching Club American Oaks and at a mile and a quarter in the Alabama, the filly counterpart to next Saturday's Travers Stakes. Even her jockey, Jerry Bailey, was impressed with the way she handled Manistique, the betting choice, ridden by Gary Stevens, who flew here from the West Coast for the race. ''I had a lot of horse at every point in the race,'' Bailey said, ''and I couldn't believe how she was running. I was right behind the favorite, and I wasn't sure how much horse Gary had, but I knew that he would need a lot because my filly was ready to run. This was the best that she finished, and past the wire she still had more in her. To have her this ready was just incredible.'' The man who got her ready was Carl ...

1999 Travers Stakes [04:33]
Lemon Drop Kid supplied a smashing encore to his victory in the Belmont Stakes today when he won the 130th running of the Travers and raced to the head of this season's class of 3-year-olds. The bay son of Kingmambo actually rewrote the climax to his June script in which he held off the long shot Vision and Verse by a head before a record Belmont crowd of 85818. This time, running against three of his Triple Crown rivals and four other colts with championship ambitions, he finished three-quarters of a length in front of Vision and Verse before a record Travers crowd of 51371. Then came the warriors: Menifee, the 9-5 favorite, got trapped on the inside and ran third in front of his stablemate, Ecton Park, while the star of the D. Wayne Lukas barn, Cat Thief, finished seventh with breathing problems. So, in million-dollar landmark races less than three months apart, Lemon Drop Kid staked his claim to the leadership of the class. It was once held by Charismatic, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness before running third in the Belmont, which he finished with a fractured leg that forced his retirement. And Lemon Drop Kid's jockey, Jose Santos, was quick to assert the claim. ''He is one of the best, if not the best 3-year-old,'' Santos said. ''He won the Belmont, beat Charismatic, and now he's won the Travers. Maybe now he'll get the respect he deserves.'' Scotty Schulhofer, who trains Lemon Drop Kid for Jeanne Vance and her husband, Laddie, remembered that his horse ...
