1999 Hopeful Stakes Grade I [04:04]
The monster of the freshman class, More Than Ready, was back in the barn resting for the battles of autumn at Belmont Park and the championships beyond. But in his place came the challengers led by High Yield, the West Coast star trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who gave More Than Ready something to think about when he won the Hopeful Stakes today at Saratoga by five lengths. High Yield is a 2-year-old chestnut son of Storm Cat, and he arrived with impeccable credentials. He ran second in his debut at Hollywood Park in July, third in a stakes race the next time and was a runaway first this afternoon. He is owned by a clutch of racing's aristocrats: Bob and Beverly Lewis, Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier. He is handled by Lukas, who has won four runnings of the Hopeful in this decade and 25 stakes for 2-year-old horses over all. And he was ridden by Jerry Bailey, the prince of jockeys. So his success today in Saratoga's climactic race for juvenile colts was no surprise. High Yield was the 8-5 favorite to outrun Afternoon Affair, the second choice, who showed no response in the homestretch and finished fifth. And at the wire, High Yield had five lengths on the long shot Settlement, who had three lengths on Exciting Story. Afterward, Lukas wasted no time setting the stage for the eventual confrontation between High Yield and the undefeated More Than Ready, who is trained by Todd Pletcher, his onetime assistant. ''I wish More Than Ready had been in there today,'' Lukas said in ...

1998 Iselin Handicap Grade I [06:11]
Weight has long been the great equalizer in horse racing, and today at Monmouth Park, it almost humbled Skip Away. Almost. Spotting his six modest rivals from 16 to 20 pounds as he carried top weight of 131 pounds, Skip Away was caught in midstretch by Stormin Fever but rallied through the final sixteenth to win the $500000 Iselin Handicap by a nose, his eighth straight victory. The crowd of 19107 gasped in disbelief as Stormin Fever, a 10-1 shot whose only victories this year have been in allowance races, moved up rapidly on the far turn and took dead aim at the prohibitive favorite at the head of the stretch. Under vigorous urging from Jose Santos, Stormin Fever -- who carried 113 pounds -- poked a nose in front in the deep stretch, but Skip Away came back on the inside in the final strides and actually was pulling off at the wire. ''It probably scared a lot of people more than me,'' said Jerry Bailey, the jockey, who sent Skip Away to the lead after a half-mile. ''He was in a neutral mode, and when the other horse came to him, I could feel his motor start running again. With the weight, it took him a few strides to get going again.'' The performance surprised Santos. ''At the eighth pole, I thought I was home free,'' the jockey said. ''Skip Away had to really show class today to come back and beat me.'' Sonny Hine, Skip Away's trainer, said: ''Skippy never gives up. I wasn't worried when that other horse came up to him.'' If Hine had a concern, it was over another ...

1997 Blue Grass Stakes Grade I [00:55]
There was a threat of rain. There was nervousness over a recent loss in Florida. It was a new race over a new track, and there were several new shooters trying to knock him off. But none of Pulpit's potential problems materialized. It was as if divine intervention was bestowed upon the colt, who resurrected his standing among the nation's leading 3-year-olds with an emphatic victory today in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland Race Course. Pulpit romped to a 3 1/2-length victory over Acceptable to set up a dramatic rematch with his archrival, Captain Bodgit, in the Kentucky Derby three weeks from today. Captain Bodgit and Pulpit split two meetings in Florida this winter, then went their separate ways today. One hour before Pulpit's victory, Captain Bodgit took the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in New York. ''Now we'll find out who's best,'' said Pulpit's trainer, Frank Brothers. Pulpit was at his best today. He was making his first start since his first career loss, which came when he ran second to Captain Bodgit in last month's Florida Derby. He was running for the first time anywhere other than Gulfstream Park. Two colts from California, Stolen Gold and King Crimson, were flown here to offer a fresh challenge. And overnight rain left the track muddy for the day's first race. But the combination of blustery winds and late-afternoon sunshine dried out the track. It was fast, and so was Pulpit. Pulpit stalked the early pace-setter, Jules, through comfortable fractions of 233/5 ...
