1999 Suburban Handicap Grade I [03:20]
Behrens, handling the distance, the competition and the 100-degree heat with professional sureness, raced into the upper levels of handicap horses in this country yesterday when he won the 113th running of the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park by nearly three lengths. It was the fourth straight success for the 5-year-old bay, who now faces the second half of the year with great credentials and great expectations. In his next start, the $600000 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga on Aug. 1, Behrens will face Victory Gallop. Four weeks later, in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar, he will race Real Quiet. If there are any questions after that, all three horses should answer them in the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 6. But yesterday, Behrens left nothing unanswered. He was the overwhelming choice to outrun eight rivals on the hottest day of the year before 11364 stifled fans, and he made no mistakes. With Jorge Chavez directing the performance from the saddle, Behrens ran third after half a mile, second after three-quarters and first after one mile. Then, after extending his lead through the homestretch, he crossed the wire 2 3/4 lengths in front of the 41-1 long shot Catienus. Behrens, carrying the high weight of 121 pounds, had run a mile and a quarter in a snappy 2:01 and had staked a strong claim to the front ranks of the nation's senior horses. ''You always worry about the heat; you can't not worry about it,'' said his trainer, H. James ...

2010 Dwyer (G2) - Fly Down [03:32]
Fly Downs last-to-first victory in the Grade 2, $200000 Dwyer on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Belmont Park may have earned the colt a shot at the Belmont Stakes. The 3-year-old son of Mineshaft barreled into the lead rounding the far turn and pulled clear to a six-length win over 3-5 favorite Drosselmeyer in the Dwyer, which in its new spot on The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) calendar serves as a steppingstone to the 142nd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes on June 5. Trained by Hall of Famer Nick Zito, who also has Kentucky Derby runner-up Ice Box under consideration for the final leg of racings Triple Crown, Fly Down covered the 1 1/8th miles in 1:50.25 as he extended his record to three victories from five starts. Well see what happens in the next 30 days, said Zito, a two-time winner of the 1 ½ mile Belmont, by telephone. He puts a lot into his races. Pell at the 2008 Keeneland September Sale, broke his maiden going 1 1/16th miles at Churchill Downs in his second start as a 2-year-old, and then won a 1 1/8th mile allowance at Gulfstream Park to launch his sophomore campaign in February. Fly Down next finished ninth after being steadied in the March 27 Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds. Weve always given him a nice break between races, said Pell, a money manager from New York. Nick has told me from ...
