1988 Carter Handicap [01:00]
Gulch, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who saddled the Kentucky Derby winner, Winning Colors, took the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct yesterday. The horse took full advantage of the extremely fast racing surface to carry 124 pounds and Jose Santos seven furlongs, tying a stakes record of 1:20 2/5. Afleet, the favorite, was runner-up in the field of eight. Gulch's clocking duplicated that of King's Bishop, who posted the stakes standard in 1973. It was only one-fifth of a second slower than Dr. Fager's track record of 1:20 1/5, established in 1968. It's Acedemic, the outsider at $65.70-$1, was third ahead of Stacked Pack, King's Swan, Prospector's Halo, Seattle Knight and Love That Mac. Gulch, a 4-year-old son of Mr. Prospector-Jameela, earned $174300, the winner's share of the gross purse of $290500, for his owner-breeder, Peter M. Brant, and paid $6.40 for $2 to win as the second choice. He led at every call, posting fractions of 22 3/5, 44 4/5 and 1:08 2/5. With his earnings in the Carter, Gulch pushed his career earnings to $2033281, moving him into 28th position on the career list just ahead of Kelso.

1997 Dwyer Stakes [01:09]
A new star raced into the 3-year-old picture at Belmont Park yesterday, when Behrens won the Dwyer Stakes and extended his baby winning streak to three races and ended the winning streak of Banker's Gold at four. A son of Pleasant Colony, Behrens won his first two races by a combined margin of almost eight lengths, and, although he had raced only twice in six months, dazzled people with his speed in workouts. This time, he flashed his speed in a stakes race, roaring from fifth place to second at the head of the homestretch and blowing into the lead and widening it to 1 1/4 lengths over Glitman, who had 7 lengths on the favorite, Banker's Gold. ''He's just an outstanding horse, and he keeps proving it to us,'' said James Bond, who trains Behrens. ''The scary thing is that he's still only learning to run.'' Behrens did not race last year at 2, made his debut at Gulfstream Park in Florida in January, won again at Belmont in May and confronted Banker's Gold yesterday in the Dwyer. It is an 80-year-old race that has been won by superstars like Man o' War and Native Dancer, and it seemed likely that Banker's Gold might make it a milestone in his career. But, with Eddie Maple in the saddle, he stalked the fast pace set by Glitman and Smokin Mel, and could not overtake them in the stretch. Meanwhile, Behrens, carrying five fewer pounds, bided his time under Jerry Bailey and swept home. Behrens ran the mile and a sixteenth in 1 minute 42 1/5 seconds, paid $5.90 for $2 to win ...

Working W/ Race: Bareback 6-10-10 [03:08]
Because I have to sell my western saddle, I've been doing a lot of bareback riding lately. I'd say I've improved a lot considering about a year ago I couldn't do it at all. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed from my videos, but Race is a rather unique horse. He has so much energy, and it is so hard to get him working right. But when his mind is in the right place, he's amazing. I might try giving him a calming agent to see if his energy level and attitude will change. The song is "These Are The Days" by Sugarland.
