Rightly So - 2010 Ballerina (G1) [01:52]
Rightly So led every step and earned her first Grade 1 win Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course with a front-running, four-length victory over Warbling in the 32nd running of the $250000 Ballerina Stakes. The consistent daughter of Read the Footnotes, never worse than third in 11 lifetime starts, immediately shot to the front when the gates opened for the seven-furlong dash and sashayed unthreatened through opening fractions of 22.46, 44.80 and 1:09.29. Opening up through the final yards under jockey Cornelio Velasquez after a fleeting challenge from Warbling, Rightly So hit the wire in 1:22.58 for her second victory in five starts this year. "My filly broke well and went right to the lead and she finished well, too," said Velasquez, who was aboard for her first graded stakes win in the Grade 3 Bed o' Roses Handicap at Belmont Park on July 5. "I had a lot of horse at the quarter pole, so she really ran a big one. Speed has been holding up well today, and I was fortunate to have a good break and make the lead." Rightly So, who was bred in New York and carries the colors of Zayat Stables, LLC, earned $150000 for the victory, her seventh from 11 lifetime starts, and has now amassed $480050. The fourth choice at 9-2 choice in the field of eight fillies and mares, she returned $11.40 for a $2 win bet.

Dunkirk - Maiden Race [01:44]
Dunkirk, a $3.7 million yearling purchase owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, made that price look like a potential bargain when he overcame traffic problems, swung six wide and blew his opposition away in his career debut at Gulfstream Park. The 3-year-old gray son of Unbridled's Song, out of 2000 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Secret Status, by AP Indy, drew off at will from his 11 opponents to win by 5 3/4 lengths, covering the seven furlongs in 1:25 flat over a track that was playing slow for the first five races. Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Edgar Prado, Dunkirk, who was sold at the 2007 Keeneland September sale by Lane's End Farm as agent, had been working steadily at Palm Meadows since last November. The colt was sent off as the 8-5 favorite. Longshots Santana Six and Spanish Fortune finished second and third, respectively. Prado kept Dunkirk in seventh behind horses through quick opening fractions of :22.35 and :45.34. Blocked by a wall of horses, Prado moved out but was unable to find any holes. He then swung him six wide, and Dunkirk quickly leveled off and stormed to the lead, drawing off with every stride.

New York Watch: Position Limit [01:24]
George Steinbrenner, the principal owner of the New York Yankees who passed away Tuesday at the age of 80, was renowned for his will to win, and Position Limit helped keep that legacy alive today at Belmont Park when she broke her maiden impressively. Position Limit is a 2-year-old daughter of freshman sire Bellamy Road, who dominated his opponents in the 2005 Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack by 17 ½ lengths while racing for Steinbrenner's Kinsman Stable. "I thought it was interesting timing, and obviously Bellamy Road was one of Mr. Steinbrenner's better horses," said Todd Pletcher, who trains Position Limit for Starlight Partners. "It's nice seeing him getting off to a good start as a stallion, and it's a fitting tribute to the man." The 4-1 third choice in today's fourth race, Position Limit raced four wide in fifth around the far turn, seized command from the pacesetter inside the quarter pole, and drew off under a vigorous hand ride in the stretch to prevail by 6 ¾ lengths. The final time for 5 ½ furlongs in the mud was 1:04.70. Bellamy Road, who finished seventh in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and second in the Grade 1 Travers in his only two efforts following the Wood, stood the 2010 breeding season at Pauls Mill in Versailles, Ky. for a $10000 fee. With today's victory, Position Limit became the second winner for the 8-year-old son of Concerto. "We were very pleased with the way she had trained," said Pletcher. "She was a first-time starter who we thought ...

1999 Travers Stakes [04:33]
Lemon Drop Kid supplied a smashing encore to his victory in the Belmont Stakes today when he won the 130th running of the Travers and raced to the head of this season's class of 3-year-olds. The bay son of Kingmambo actually rewrote the climax to his June script in which he held off the long shot Vision and Verse by a head before a record Belmont crowd of 85818. This time, running against three of his Triple Crown rivals and four other colts with championship ambitions, he finished three-quarters of a length in front of Vision and Verse before a record Travers crowd of 51371. Then came the warriors: Menifee, the 9-5 favorite, got trapped on the inside and ran third in front of his stablemate, Ecton Park, while the star of the D. Wayne Lukas barn, Cat Thief, finished seventh with breathing problems. So, in million-dollar landmark races less than three months apart, Lemon Drop Kid staked his claim to the leadership of the class. It was once held by Charismatic, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness before running third in the Belmont, which he finished with a fractured leg that forced his retirement. And Lemon Drop Kid's jockey, Jose Santos, was quick to assert the claim. ''He is one of the best, if not the best 3-year-old,'' Santos said. ''He won the Belmont, beat Charismatic, and now he's won the Travers. Maybe now he'll get the respect he deserves.'' Scotty Schulhofer, who trains Lemon Drop Kid for Jeanne Vance and her husband, Laddie, remembered that his horse ...
