1995 Blue Grass Stakes [12:23]
While the power horses of East and West stalked and chased, and while a medical miracle named Randy Romero hunched down in the saddle, a 30-1 long shot named Wild Syn led every step of the way today to win the Blue Grass Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths over Suave Prospect. And, while doing so, he royally scrambled the traffic on the road to the Kentucky Derby. No horse in the race was given less chance to win, yet no horse in the race ever got in front of him. He simply set a tantalizing pace that no jockey challenged, and at the end of a mile and one-eighth he still had the lead over some of the ranking candidates for the Derby: Suave Prospect, who held off the late run by Tejano Run by the length of his head, and then Thunder Gulch two lengths farther back. No match race developed between Thunder Gulch and Suave Prospect, as expected. No winning drive to the wire in the homestretch by Tejano Run, as expected. No clarifying of the Derby picture, as expected. And with the Canadian champion Talkin Man blitzing the field in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in New York -- three weeks after he won the Gotham -- the Derby sweepstakes underwent a mighty one-day shakeout. Instead, at the picturesque Keeneland track in the heart of the horse country, it was all Wild Syn. He was running in only his second stakes race, guided by a jockey who retired last year after a career filled with injuries and at least three comebacks and saddled by a 26-year-old trainer, Thomas Arnemann. Not only that ...

1995 Wood Memorial Stakes [13:22]
The road to Kentucky may run through New York after all. In perhaps the most impressive performance by a 3-year-old colt this year and on the heels of his decisive victory in the Gotham three weeks ago, Talkin Man led every step of the way to win the 71st running of the $500000 Wood Memorial yesterday at Aqueduct. Talkin Man did it in impressive fashion, toying with seven colts before pulling away for a 7 3/4-length victory over Knockadoon and assuring himself a date at Churchill Downs in three weeks, perhaps as the favorite of the Kentucky Derby on May 6. The 2-to-5 favorite in the Grade II Wood, Talkin Man left the rest of the field -- none had won a graded stakes race -- in the dust at the top of the stretch. Jockey Shane Sellers, riding the Canadian-bred horse for the first, and likely last time, because Mike Smith had to honor another commitment in Arkansas, never used his whip as his mount covered the mile and an eighth in an easy 1:491/5 . "I was just a passenger out there," Sellers said after Talkin Man breezed through fractions of 234/5 seconds for the quarter, 48 flat for the half, 1:123/5 over 6 furlongs and the mile in 1:37 even, while never being asked to run all out. "Regardless of what the pace was, I knew what I had underneath me. He was telling me, 'We OK, we OK Don't worry about nothing.' " Coupled with the upset victory by the 30-1 long shot Wild Syn in the Blue Grass at Keeneland a little over an hour earlier, Talkin Man's victory guarantees that the ...

1990 Pimlico Special : ABC Broadcast [17:41]
Criminal Type scored a far-reaching victory in the Pimlico Special Saturday. The 5-year-old son of Alydar ran the fastest 1 3/16 miles in Pimlico history, sent his trainer, Wayne Lukas, over the $100-million mark in career purses and exposed a story about how fine the line is between being a hero and a heel as a jockey's agent. Under Jose Santos, who was riding him for the first time, Criminal Type shadowed Ruhlmann all the way around, edged past him with about 50 yards left and won by a neck in the first $1-million race ever run in Maryland. Ruhlmann, the second betting choice at 2-1, finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of De Roche, a 34-1 shot who finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of Mi Selecto. Opening Verse, made the 3-2 favorite by a crowd of 15850 on a cool, overcast day, flattened out in the stretch and wound up fifth, beaten by about 3 1/4 lengths. Wind Splitter finished sixth, and after him in the 10-horse field came Silver Survivor, Gorgeous, With Approval and Music Merci. Criminal Type's time was 1:53, breaking by a fifth of a second the record that Blushing John set in winning the Special last year. The Special is the same distance as the Preakness, which will be run here next Saturday, and the fastest Preakness times have been Secretariat's unofficial 1:53 2/5 clocking in 1973 and Tank's Prospect's matching time in 1985. Criminal Type was the fourth betting choice and paid $17.40, $6.80 and $5.20. Ruhlmann paid $4.80 and $4.60, and De Roche's show price was $10.20. A ...
