1994 Discovery Handicap [02:23]
Serious Spender beat Unaccounted For, the 2-5 favorite, by a head in the Discovery Handicap yesterday at Aqueduct. Malmo was seven lengths back, and Gifted Son completed the four-horse field. The winner, owned by John Caputo and trained by Dominick Schettino, ran the mile and a sixteenth under Jorge Chavez in a slow 1:511/5 and returned $12.20 for every $2 bet in the belief that he could upset Unaccounted For, who is trained by Scotty Schulhofer and was ridden by Jose Santos. "I don't see any excuse," Santos said. "He was following that horse the whole way. We hooked up with him at the half-mile pole and got the lead at the sixteenth pole. But that other horse came back and beat him."

1990 San Vicente Stakes [01:11]
Chris McCarron was speaking for a lot of people when he yelled to Gary Stevens with about an eighth of a mile to run in the $106075 San Vicente Breeders' Cup Stakes Saturday at Santa Anita. "I guess he's the real thing," McCarron shouted after Mister Frisky had surged past favored Tarascon in the seven-furlong San Vicente. The pride of Puerto Rico, 13 for 13 before leaving the island, proved he can compete on the mainland. The first 2-year-old to be named Horse of the Year in Puerto Rico since Bold Forbes, Mister Frisky defeated Tarascon by a length in 1:22 3/5, and it was another eight lengths back to Top Cash. In front every step in almost all of his previous races, Mister Frisky, the Marsayas colt, was fourth after breaking a step slowly. He moved up to join Tarascon, the 13-10 choice, nearing the quarter pole, then took charge and provided Stevens with his fourth winner of the day. "This is a helluva good horse," said trainer Laz Barrera, who didn't do badly after taking over Bold Forbes 14 years earlier. "This sucker can run. "When my friend in Puerto Rico (Enrique Ubarri) told me he's as good as Bold Forbes, I believed him. The day he left Puerto ...

1988 Carter Handicap [01:00]
Gulch, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who saddled the Kentucky Derby winner, Winning Colors, took the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct yesterday. The horse took full advantage of the extremely fast racing surface to carry 124 pounds and Jose Santos seven furlongs, tying a stakes record of 1:20 2/5. Afleet, the favorite, was runner-up in the field of eight. Gulch's clocking duplicated that of King's Bishop, who posted the stakes standard in 1973. It was only one-fifth of a second slower than Dr. Fager's track record of 1:20 1/5, established in 1968. It's Acedemic, the outsider at $65.70-$1, was third ahead of Stacked Pack, King's Swan, Prospector's Halo, Seattle Knight and Love That Mac. Gulch, a 4-year-old son of Mr. Prospector-Jameela, earned $174300, the winner's share of the gross purse of $290500, for his owner-breeder, Peter M. Brant, and paid $6.40 for $2 to win as the second choice. He led at every call, posting fractions of 22 3/5, 44 4/5 and 1:08 2/5. With his earnings in the Carter, Gulch pushed his career earnings to $2033281, moving him into 28th position on the career list just ahead of Kelso.
