Rodeo Terminology in the Navajo Language [04:26]
Rodeo, or known as Ahóóhai in the Navajo language, is a very popular sport on the Navajo reservation. Since many Navajos have cattle, it's not suprising that Navajos undertaken this competitive sports event. This video basically covers the names of the events in Navajo, both timed and rough stock events. This video also covers the names of key individuals involved in a rodeo, for example: Akałii: Cowboy: Dóola Bił Naalgeedígíí: Bull Rider Hastiin Łá̜ At'ínígíí: Rodeo Clown Bił Nída'algeedgo Nídayiiláhígíí: Pick-Up Man The term "rodeo" in Navajo comes from the word "Naa'ahóóhai," which means "chicken" in Navajo. Rodeos on the reservation initiated around a "chicken-pull." Over time, this word got shortened to "ahóóhai," and rather than being named after chicken pulls it became the term for "rodeos" as rodeos got popular on the reservation. Also, some people will use the term "Naa'ahóóhai" or "Ahóóhai" for agricultural shows; tribal, county, or state fairs. So I went riding yesterday and came out with some ok clips. Yes, before you ask I'm stil riding Amazonic. I'm not gonna let one little fall knock my confidence, I've been riding for too long to let that happen. Amo was being a total star until we came to the last fence of our jumping course. Once again, she refused. I wasn't happy as I'd thought she'd have got over it by now. The jump was around 2ft maybe? Yet she still refused. My instructor lowered it (not for my benefit, but for the horse's - which is the most important thing) and she went over it smoothly. I'm sure she has a slight fear about big fences but I'm not exactly sure why. But, oh well! Nevermind, it was still a great lesson. I actually got told to get into a "jockey position" which is basically just a jumping position without the jump, hehe. First in trot, then in canter. Amo was such a happy pony after her extended canter. Being an ex-race horse who can blame her? I bet she misses her racing days, eh? Secretariat - The Meadow Monster [01:24]
Another video of the mighty Secretariat! In the first two racing clips you can clearly see this horse's big, powerful stride eating up the turf. His jockey, Ron Turcotte, once said Secretariat was an even better runner on the grass, after he won the Man o' War Stakes. He also said Secretariat's action was so smooth he didn't always know how fast he was going. "The Great Horse Stall" Dena Kirkpatrick DVD 2009 [09:16]
This was filmed in the summer of 2009. It started out as being a casual conversation with the production crew in my barn, the last morning of filming for my DVD set. Later, we dug out all of those old runs of the horses and it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the enitre DVD set. Since it has been out for a couple years now, I thought it would be fun to share.
