1996 Jockey Club Gold Cup + Post Race [09:35]
Cigar made a noble but losing farewell to racing in New York yesterday when he was beaten by a head by Skip Away in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup. It was only the second time in his last 19 races that the 6-year-old super horse had been outrun, but it also was the second time in his last three starts. So, age, luck and fast horses may be catching up to him. He gave it a special poignancy by staging a valiant rally through the homestretch, but missed by the length of Skip Away's head. And while it took two horses to spring the trap that ended Cigar's 16-race winning streak at Del Mar in August, this time it took just one very swift, very tough 3-year-old. As they streaked to the finish, Skip Away was fighting on the inside to keep his lead and Cigar was charging on the outside to snatch it. And flying at their heels came two other 3-year-old stars, Louis Quatorze, two lengths behind Cigar, and Editor's Note, one length behind Louis Quatorze. ''I'd just be whining if I made excuses,'' said Bill Mott, who trains Cigar for Allen Paulson of California. ''I don't feel uncomfortable about anything that's happened. I thought he ran a pretty darned good race. He had a little more left to do at the half-mile pole than he normally has to, but that doesn't mean we're making excuses.'' Jerry Bailey, who rode Cigar through his record-tying winning streak, put it bluntly: ''I ran second. I ran into a horse who ran an exceptional race. I have to tip my hat to the winner. I knew it ...

1998 Iselin Handicap Grade I [06:11]
Weight has long been the great equalizer in horse racing, and today at Monmouth Park, it almost humbled Skip Away. Almost. Spotting his six modest rivals from 16 to 20 pounds as he carried top weight of 131 pounds, Skip Away was caught in midstretch by Stormin Fever but rallied through the final sixteenth to win the $500000 Iselin Handicap by a nose, his eighth straight victory. The crowd of 19107 gasped in disbelief as Stormin Fever, a 10-1 shot whose only victories this year have been in allowance races, moved up rapidly on the far turn and took dead aim at the prohibitive favorite at the head of the stretch. Under vigorous urging from Jose Santos, Stormin Fever -- who carried 113 pounds -- poked a nose in front in the deep stretch, but Skip Away came back on the inside in the final strides and actually was pulling off at the wire. ''It probably scared a lot of people more than me,'' said Jerry Bailey, the jockey, who sent Skip Away to the lead after a half-mile. ''He was in a neutral mode, and when the other horse came to him, I could feel his motor start running again. With the weight, it took him a few strides to get going again.'' The performance surprised Santos. ''At the eighth pole, I thought I was home free,'' the jockey said. ''Skip Away had to really show class today to come back and beat me.'' Sonny Hine, Skip Away's trainer, said: ''Skippy never gives up. I wasn't worried when that other horse came up to him.'' If Hine had a concern, it was over another ...

1997 Suburban Handicap Grade I [02:29]
Skip Away confirmed yesterday that he has risen to the top of his class, battling back to win in the homestretch over Will's Way and Formal Gold in the 111th running of the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park. Those three horses may be the East Coast's answer to the handicap stars of the West: Gentlemen, Siphon and Sandpit. In any case, they gave stirring performances yesterday. Skip Away opened the year with four straight losses since the memorable day last October when he defeated the great Cigar by a head in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. That was his sixth victory of 1996, and it clinched his election as the champion 3-year-old colt of last season. But this season, he did not win until May 31, when he outdueled Formal Gold by a head with Will's Way third in the Massachusetts Handicap. Then he removed all doubts yesterday. He again showed peak form and the instincts of a classy fighter as the three horses turned for home at the head of the six-horse field with three celebrated jockeys positioning them for the final quarter-mile: Shane Sellers aboard Skip Away, Jerry Bailey on Will's Way and Mike Smith riding Formal Gold. Skip Away was running third behind his two Eastern rivals, but he challenged Will's Way for the lead once on the turn for home, wrested the lead away briefly and then entered the stretch still third and apparently finished. But Sellers moved him from the softer rail to the outside, and Skip Away found the stamina to crank up another rally as he rolled through ...
