After flying 3000 miles to do it, Bertrando injected some California intrigue into the contest for Horse of the Year yesterday when he led all the way to win the $500000 Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park by a resounding 13 1/2 lengths over the hometown hero, Devil His Due. It was four weeks after Bertrando had won the Pacific Classic and come into his own as perhaps the most formidable speedhorse on the West Coast, and maybe in the country. And he did nothing to diminish his stature yesterday as Gary Stevens rode him to the victory that marked him as one of the leading candidates for year-end honors and championships. Devil His Due, the winner of four stakes this year, did win something of value yesterday. He won the "race within the race," the contest for first place in the American Championship Racing Series, which ended with the Woodward. With points accumulated from his earlier races, he beat out Bertrando for the top bonus of $550000, while Bertrando got second prize of $225000. Valley Crossing ran third in the Woodward and third in the series for a bonus of $125000. But during the last two months, Bertrando has soared. He crossed the country in July and ran third behind Valley Crossing and Devil His Due in the Iselin Handicap at Monmouth Park in New Jersey. Fair Meadows at Tulsa's 2012 race meet came to a close on August 4 with the running of the $92295 Speedhorse Gold & Silver Cup Derby. Haulin Candy Salt emerged the winner after a final burst of speed in the final strides of the 350 yard test. Alex Baldillez, Jr rode the Oklahoma bred filly in the grade three event. She's trained by Clinton Crawford for owner Carl Pevehouse.

Nine of the region's top two-year-old Quarter Horse runners went postward on August 4 in the grade two 350 yard Speedhorse Gold & Silver Cup Futurity. The $331349 test was run at Fair Meadows in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The fastest qualifier for the 350 yard event, Hiclass Vodka, showed the same form by winning it a half length over Special Candy Paint. Stormy Smith rode the colt, who is trained by Clinton Crawford.
