It was an exciting race at the Preakness Stakes. The race came down to the very end, with I'll Have Another challenging Bodemeister to win the race. It looked like Bodemeister was going to win, but I'll Have Another managed to edge ahead at the end of the race The horse, with jockey Mario Gutierrez, went from 15-to-1 shot to Kentucky Derby winner two weeks ago. Now the three-year-old colt is the only competitor in the field with a chance to capture the sport's elusive Triple Crown. I'll Have Another became the first horse since 2008 to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown, edging Bodemeister again in a thrilling finish to the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes Saturday at sun-splashed Pimlico Race Course. O'Neill said prior to the race that what worked at 1¼ miles in a 20-horse field at Churchill Downs won't necessarily fly in the 13/16-mile middle leg of the Triple Crown, since Pimlico is known for its tight turns and speed-favoring surface. And it turned out to be a differeent race completely. O'Neill vowed to change instructions for 25-year-old upstart jockey Mario Gutierrez before the 11 starters go to the gate. The 143 2011 winner of the Belmont Stakes a 24-1 shot that wins the Belmont Stakes on Saturday June 11th, taking the lead from Preakness winner Shackleford in the sloppy stretch and winning the final leg of the Triple Crown. Shackleford led from the start, but when the field of 12 turned for home in the 1½-mile Belmont, he began tiring in the muck as long shots Stay Thirsty and Ruler On Ice closed in. It was Ruler On Ice, under Jose Valdivia Jr., who splashed home first, three-quarters of a length ahead of Stay Thirsty. The winning time for the oldest and longest race in the Triple Crown was a slow 2:30.88. Ruler On Ice returned $51.50, $26 and $13.60. Stay Thirsty, owner Mike Repole's second-best 3-year-old behind the sidelined Uncle Mo, paid $19.40 and $10.80. Brilliant Speed was third and returned $7.90 to show. Affirmed splashes home first in the 1979 Woodward at Belmont [02:31]
Making the penultimate start of his illustrious career, the Harbor View Farm's Affirmed was sent off at 2-5 and did not disappoint his backers as he rolled to a two and a half length victory in the September 22, 1979 Woodward Stakes over a sloppy Belmont Park oval. In his march toward Horse of the Year honors, Affirmed took on a pair of top younger rivals, including that year's Belmont Stakes winner Coastal and the talented Czaravich. Sirlad and Mister Brea rounded out the field of five. Affirmed was trained by Laz Barrera and ridden here by Laffit Pincay, Jr., who finished first aboard Affirmed (with one disqualification) the ten times he ultimately piloted him.
